if you have never programmed before mate i would go for either Visual Basic .Net or C# .Net, you can download the Express editions for free from Microsoft

get yourself some ebooks and get reading

If I get to be married to Barb I'll have total control of Sunnyvale and then I can unleash the shitnami tidal wave that will engulf Ricky and extinguish his shitflames forever. And with any luck he'll drown in the undershit of that wave. Shitwaves.

there are seperate programs for each language

if your starting with C# for example (my language of choice at the moment)
    download from http://www.microsoft.com/express/downloads/

for a starting tutorial try http://www.c-sharpcorner.com/uploadf...torial1an.aspx

should give you a basis, if you need more help then let me know

    good luck

What do you want to write mate, apps, games?

It doesn't sound like you have much experience of coding, but depending what you are aiming to produce (apps/games) would depend on the best recommendation.

I am in the same boat really, left uni over year and a half ago, and trying to get back into programming, but really not sure what skills companies are hoping for now. I was taught VB.Net at a low level, which I know is not used alot within companies at the moment. For me video tutorials worked great, much better then books.

Used them before, very good. Can vouch for. I just need to think whats the sensible career choice, games programmer or some other type of programming. As with programming, certain areas require certain types of languages.

p.s, sorry for the hijack lol

if your looking at game development then i suggest you look at Unity, check out http://unity3d.com/ its a free game development tool, you can create games using basically a modified java script coding language, just started looking into it myself but seems pretty powerful, not sure if it supports different platforms but definately worth a look

Unreal 3 Engine is also freely available for non-commercial use with all the tools you need to make high quality games.

there is nothing particular i am aiming to do at the moment. just want to know if i can learn it to be able to code. if i can then hopefully use it for a new employment change somewhere in the future. i have a friend who programs for his own business using java. he said if im serious enough then i could spend some time with him to help with my learning. im not really much good with computers hence why im a bit apprehensive but am willing to put ererything into learning

ok, so i have a book. ANSI C programming by Lawlor. anyone read it. my programming friend lent it me yesterday. looks quite interesting. an older book but he used it when in uni and said it was a good start. apparantly its easier to learn C before other languages. what do you all think
