    Default java query

partway through the 'learn C' book i have been reading i decided to put it down and pick up an old 'teach yourself Java 2' book. C just seemed so complex to me. understood quite a bit but also didnt understand enough and a lot wasn't sinking in.
this book on java is a few years old and the author is using win 95 and NT and the software is Java 2 using the Java Development Kit (JDK) Now i assume the software is probably outdated as im reading a book published in 1998. what is the current Java software i should be using. and are development tools still seperate or and the built in to the software now
