does it matter whether you use butane or propane for a gas barbeque. picked up a bottle of propane and my mate told me i should use butane. i thought they both burn so is there really a massive difference?
anyone any experience on the matter

Propane is stored in red or green cylinders as which green are mostly used for bbq's and patio heaters as they are a more toxic gas and for outdoor use, Butane is stored in blue cylinders and is mostly used for caravan use ie. indoors as it is a less toxic gas... Your mate is wrong.
I believe that Propane burns at a higher temperature which is why its used for BBQ's... it burns the food faster!!..
I personally use Propane on my BBQ and have never had a problem destroying good meat!
They will generally use a different regulator as well so buy the gas that goes with the regulator on your BBQ (most probably propane)
thanks guys. got a propane bottle and a regulator that came with it. i assume it is the correct one but didnt really know there were different regulators. thought they were all generally the same. how do i check if i have the right one. my bottle is a 15kg one and orange in colour. its got Alto Gas wrote on the side. i assume this is just a company name.
If it's a clip on regulator you can do what I did & buy a screw on regulator (got mine online happened to be a boat supplies place) so you can use larger bottles which are cheaper to fill/replace than the patio gas type bottles. I was asked 1st time for a deposit or a bottle to exchange, I mentioned this to a mate & he bought me 3 from the local tip - they have an area set aside for them.
No sympathy for the devil; keep that in mind. Buy the ticket, take the ride...
it is a screw in regulator
yea mate go to the tip ,get a bottle then go and exchange it ,so no deposite (can be alot)i got a campingaz 907 bottle from the tip and they go on ebay for £20 plus
be healthy be happy
