Not a proper answer but have you considered using VLC Media Player?

Was it a clean install e.g New Hard Drive or Installed after format = if yes, sounds like a driver fault,
    try un-installing drivers and restarting.

If it was an upgrade from a 32 windows, it is a setting fault, again uninstall drivers and hardware and restart.

    Hope this helps

Sounds like a conflict of codec to me, I'd disable the screensaver and just use VLC/GOM to be honest.

upgrade it to xp, or even windows 7. you'll probably fix the problem - but will also have a quicker pc

..Tc's nailed it for initial diagnostic .. just out of curiosity though - do you know how much RAM your machine has?
