    Default pc stopped playing sound

got a problem were the pc stopped playing sounds, any sounds at all. It just stopped while playing music. everything seems to check out on the pc side.

    What ive done:-

Removed the sound cards and reinstalled them.
    Restored to a earlier point.
    Tried a head set.
Tried a new sound jack cable.
    Tried new speekers
Ran a program from microsoft to check for problems http://support.microsoft.com/gp/no_s...ntrypoint=WHHT
    Threatened it with a hammer.

Anything else ive missed that i could try??

What's your operating system...xp, win 7 etc & do you have more than one sound card/device installed? For instance, I have a Auzen X-fi, Realtek HD audio (mobo on-board sound) & ATI HD Audio (graphics card - HDMI) installed & listed in the Device Manager. Have you checked to see if the O/S has set one of the other sound devices as default?

yeah thats fine was one of the first things i checked. If i take the jack out then it changes from speakers to spdif, which is not what i have connected. put it back in and back to speakers.

What parts do you have: motherboard, sound card & graphics. Is it a PCI slot sound card? Does the sound card have its own software for testing the device or for that matter have you ran vista's sound test - playback devices/speakers or headphones which ever you've got plugged in/properties/advanced. Have you checked for any possible conflicts or tried the card in another slot? If connected, have you tried the front sound port on your PC? Tried disabling SPDIF?

It might be worth getting the latest driver update for your sound card - from the mobo manufacturer's site or the manufacturer of the sound chip - probably Realtek.

I've had this before with RealtekHD Audio, drivers install and function correctly but no sound comes out....took an bit of searching and trying various drivers before one of them seemed to match the exact chipset just by trial and error.

Try getting ther HD drivers direct from the chipset manufacturer rather than the motherboard manufacturer.

ie. Get the RealtekHD Audio from Realtek site, rather than ie. Asus website
(Assuming it is RealtekHD Audio of course) and grab a few different driver revisions.

This (for me) was on XP too, so maybe it's Win7 is also the same.
