Can't update phone software to 4.0

I've tried unsuccessfully several times to upgrade my 3G Iphone to 4.0. However I keep getting error codes 3002 & 3194. It seems to be having problems when verifying with Apples servers.

I've found this info on the net but don't really understand it. Can someone explain please and if there's an easy fix?

Error 3002
Update to an older firmware isn’t working, because Apple is no longer handing out SHSHs for the device/firmware combination.
Error 3194
Occurs when trying to install an old firmware and Apple’s server disallows the installation. The only solution is to have SHSH backup and modify the hosts file to point to Saurik’s Cydia server where they are backed up (or localhost if you have it yourself).

Are you updating to 4.0? The latest fw is 4.02 you will need to update to that as you have missed the window to upgrade to anything lower. Bear in mind you will lose jailbreak and unlock if you have already done so. As it's a 3G I think this can be unlocked via redsnow

Does this mean I can update firmware to 4.02 and then jailbreak again using redsnow. I'm confused by your post as you say initially that I can't jailbreak now as I've missed the window.

You can jailbreak using redsn0w if you have a 3G on firmware 4.0.2

The tutorial on here for jailbreaking the iphone refers to firmware 3.0. Are there different instructions for jailbreaking firmware 4.2 or is it still the same?

Why go to 4.0.2? The only difference between 4.0.1 and 4.0.2 is that they patched the PDF exploit in 4.0.2. Just go to 4.0.1 for now.

Have I missed something here? as far as I knew there is no Jailbreak at all for v4.02 on 3gs or iphone 4 ! only jailbreak at the moment was up to 4.01 and they would not release any jailbreak for 4.02, rather waiting for the 4.1 release which has now taken place and wait .......

it might be worth waiting till the official 4.1 release comes out, wont be long now, and a jailbreak for that on the 3g wont be far off at all.
it should have speed improvements for the 3g.

I'm not sure about 3gs mate but I've jailbroke my 3g using redsnow as explained in this thread. I have version 4.0.2 up and running with all my cracked apps working sweet.
