Xbox 360 Whats the deal with RROD these days?

Are they fixable with the kit or am I better off just throwing in the towel?

What percentage REALLY does the kit fix? The reason I ask, I have 2 mates that have the RROD and want to know if it's worth trying or just getting a new console...?

I'd heatgun the board as well as doing the fix mate.
The overheat method had also been known to work, but nowehere near as good as a proper heatgun along with the kits.

Every one I have repaired with the washers etc hasnt lasted much more than 6 months before red lighting again some have gone off again within 2 days it can seem a bit hit and miss apparently on ebay there are a number of people offering to do a proper reflow of the board which is a much better fix they tend to charge around the £25-35 mark plus postage.

Reflowing is purely just heating the board while protecting the 'melt-ables' with foil isn't it?

I have no problem giving that a go too - seeing as they are fecked anyway!

Towel was a no go for me so I bought a £3 kit off ebay. Happy days as it seems fine now!

Done my 360 with the £3 kit from eBay and it fixed it. I did clean off the old thermal paste pretty well and put some Arctic Cooling stuff on its place... it worked fine for another year or so and I then sold it in perfect working order.

With the £3 kits it is important to get all the old paste off and make it shine! I dabbed a bit of Smirnoff on mine and left it a while. When I wiped with alcohol wipe it was like a mirror.

Probably because it's advertising a sale (even if it's a service not product) outside bst. Illegal in df rules, rather the law of the land.

I have access to a reflow oven and to be honest whether I use the oven or reflow station, the results I find to be almost identical.
I find they are very hit and miss as far as long term reliability goes but here are a few tips that may seem like common sense but can help maximise the effects.
Like mentioned above, clean, clean and clean. Make sure that all old traces are removed before attempting to go any further. I use IPA and cotton buds.
Clean the whole system, fans, heatsinks etc and make sure that it is dust free.
Use excellent quality heatsink paste, I have used many types and find that the Arctic Cooling MX-2 is about the best, there may be better but this is based on my experience.
As far as kits go, I prefer to use either the xecuter pro kit or the ones that provide spring washers and nylon washers. Tried sourcing myself but they never seem to be decent enough.
since following these methods, reliability has increased amazingly.

Don't mean to ask the obvious, but if it has been in the loft for a while and you have turned it on to try, you have plugged all of the cables in etc? You will get a problem if you do not have the video cable in the back. I can't imagine how it would Red Ring by just been in the loft for a while?

Alternatively, if that fails, rather than ripping it to pieces -

Nah, Towel trick is less successful. It works but not long term...
Mine lasted 20 minutes rather than the usual 3 so I had to resort to the Xclamp removal.
