need advice on traders insurance policy

my friend has traders insurance and he told me he can put me under his traders policy
but im not sure if allowed to do this,
reasons being
i have just passed my test
i was banned for 3 years for driving with no license

it seems brilliant if i could do this as hes only charging me £400 a year and i could drive any car but im just not sure im eligible
can i please get some advice

I would check the terms first because you have been banned etc .. Next it is illegal unless you do actually work for him if they find out the policy will be void

To check eligibility read the t&c's of your mate's policy.

My understanding of trader's policies is that any car that you will be using for personal usage has to be nominated and declared to the insurance company so they can register this on the mid and have record of your use in this fashion. You will also be insured to drive any car (up to a price limit rather than an insurance group) but only whilst performing bona fide work related to your mate's business - i.e. test drives, getting it fixed, getting parts, etc.

Also if you read around on the net, apparently loads of people with trader's policies have had their cars siezed by overzealous coppers anyway. Can't remember whether they had to pay for release in the end.

When I had mine you only had to tell them the cars you owned when the policy started, they didn't want to know if I bought or sold any after, also I had for personal use aswell and added my wife so we could both drive any car of any value at any time, the price limit was only if it was in my garage not on the road, this was 25 years ago so it could have changed a bit

Mate of mine has a traders policy and there are restrictions on what make / model you can drive.

Example he can't drive a Sierra Cosworth for some bizarre reason, but can drive the Escort version??

its the same with Jap imports and kit cars
also mate they are well fussy if its a cat D or C
and you are not normally fully covered like an individual policy
windscreen cover is normally left out and you would only get trade value on your car if it was written off.
