We are gathered here today to bare witness to the sad passing of the following pocket rockets.
It seems that the new Euro V emissions law that is due to come into force at the end of the year has caused quite a cull in the new performance car market.....
1st up is the old Chav favourite, The Ford Focus ST.
It seems that the 2.5l engine used in the performance Focus models will require too much work to meet the new emission standards. Therefore Ford will be dropping all the performance Focus models until the new shape Focus is out next year.
The White Storm trooper, The Honda Civic Type-R
True, the new type R wasn't as mental as the old shape, but the Honda VTEC 2.0L has come to the end of the road in Europe. October will be the date that production ceases for the European market for the Type-R and the Mugen. The car will be still produced for none European markets... but as far as we are concerned there is no sign of a mental engine replacement any time soon!
The old oil burner - The Mazda RX-8
So ok, this car was on its last legs anyway due to poor sales but remember that mad little 1.3 wanker motorbike sounding engine did sound great when you gave it some welly - all be it for 16mpg when pushed (but we didn't realise they were referring to oil consumption). However, Euro V was the final nail in the coffin! Rumours abound of a replacement car from Mazda but nothing solid yet.
The Rev happy - Lotus Exige / Elise power plant
Ok, its not all bad news here - but personal sadness for me. The Toyota Celica 1.8L VVT based power plant has now been given the boot. OK the new 2011 Elise has got a brand new 1.6 Toyota VVT engine that does meet Euro V spec - but the power doesn't really cut the mustard for the Exige.
Production stopped on the Exige at the end of August and so far no engine replacement has been officially announced. Rumours expect a V6 replacement soon.
However, as for that mental supercharged 2ZZ engine.... its curtains!
