X Factor: Wagner and Katie kicked off show
Wagner Carrilho and Katie Waissel were two of the show's more colourful contestants
Two of The X Factor's most controversial contestants, Wagner Carrilho and Katie Waissel, have been kicked off the ITV1 talent show.
Waissel, 24 - the subject of a string of tabloid headlines - got the lowest number of public votes.
Carrilho, meanwhile, was ejected in a unanimous vote by judges after a sing-off against Mary Byrne.
Simon Cowell suggested that an internet campaign to "derail" the show by making him the unlikely winner had failed.
"There were people out there trying to derail this show," Cowell said after Carrilho's exit.
"We've put this show back in the hands of the public."
Carrilho, 54, performed Nat King Cole's Unforgettable in the sing-off, while Byrne sang Shirley Bassey's This is My Life.
An internet campaign had urged supporters to keep voting to make Carrilho the overall winner of the series.
Bookmakers Coral said his odds had dropped from 150-1 a month ago to 6-1 before he was ejected.
The remaining contestants - Byrne, Cher Lloyd, Rebecca Ferguson, Matt Cardle and boy band One Direction - will now compete in next weekend's semi-final.
They and other finalists from this year's X Factor topped the singles chart on Sunday with their cover version of David Bowie's Heroes.
The song, which sold 144,000 copies during its first week, has been released in aid of armed forces charity Help for Heroes.
