Beginners guide to electronics??

With all the recent posts regarding the AVR USB programmable boards etc I would like to learn to do more stuff like this and making things such as circuits. Does anyone know any good books or sites relating to beginners guides to electronics and circuits ?

I imagine some of the microcontroller stuff is a bit long in the tooth now, unless they have revised it.. but the fundamentals are there and not bogged down by a shitload of maths.
