When I book a small, 3-door hatchback that is exactly what I bloody expect. This evening arrived into Gatwick and went to collect my Alamo rental vehicle. I get given the keys to a Citroen Picasso... err, excuse me but I ordered a compact, 3-door vehicle. Its OK sir, you've been upgraded. Noticing that my steely glate had not altered he blurted out "unfortunately thats all we have sir".

So I'm now driving around central London in a car that feels shit and rolls about like the General Belgrano.

Fuck me its happened again. Arrived into London City airport this morning and went to collect my hire car from Alamo (Europcar desk). Once again I'd ordered an economy car, much like a Clio or a Micra but instead I get given a shit upgrade.... a Kia C'eed diesel estate. I feel shitted upon from a great height

If I can be arsed, I might drive up to Heathrow since they have the largest selection of cars. The good thing is that I'm now in the intermediate category so I should be able to get a Golf TDi or similar.

I have a similar experience on my first visit to the states....it was long ago, before the bairns came along, so just me and wor lass, so we booked a a Geo Metro ( old style suzuki swift which I had in the UK at the same time - figured it was enough to learn to drive over there without having to learn a new car), a really basic car, that had Aircon but that was just about it.
Got there, and was initially pushed to get an upgrade, like I get every single year, but I was pre-warned about this so refused it, then was told there was no small class cars left so I had been given a free upgrade.
Went out to the car, and it was a big Oldsmobile Towncar, complete with column shift. I had no experience of driving in Florida, and all I could think about was how much of a nightmare parking it was going to be. Little did I realise how wide the slots are everywhere, and how you just dont parralell park (except in Celebration). I went back in and refused to accept it, saying I would wait till a small class car came in, which one was in being cleaned at that time. The staff looked somewhat bemused but I left in our little Geo Metro. After about a day I realised I had made a horrible mistake as our 1l car struggled so badly with power when the A/C was on, and I discovered that parking and fuel cost would have not been an issue. Oh how I wish I had taken that Oldsmobile now. Annoying that they tried to get me to pay for an upgrade that they had no choice to give me anyway.

When I went to Portugal with the other half back in 2007 we booked a hire car. My request was a 3DR Hatchback Diesel and they said it would be no problem - we had to drive from Faro to Praiai De Luz. When I showed up I was given a Skoda Fabia Estate with a 1.2 3Cyl engine - wasn't impressed to say the least.

Went Florida and and the bird behin the desk noticed it was my birthday when she checked my passport and license that day (had booked a small run around thing as we were'nt going far) and as she handed me the keys she said "don't look at the fob until you get to the parking garage, happy birthday!" when I got there the little Suzuki thing had been upgraded to a black Mustang, was well chuffed and spent two weeks caning the arse off of it!
