Default Boxee Box Now Available for Pre-order in US (Nov for Europe)

Boxee Box ditches NVIDIA's Tegra 2 for Intel CE4100, pre-orders start today at $229 MSRP

The wait for the Boxee Box is nearly over -- pre-orders begin today -- but before you drop a stack of change on D-Link's half-sunk cube, know that there's no longer an NVIDIA Tegra 2 under that tiny hood. At the last minute, Boxee switched to the Intel Atom CE4100, the same up-to-1.2GHz Sodaville chip powering Google TV. That's not all, as manufacturer D-Link told us our good friend Avner Ronen may not be able to keep his promise -- though the company still expects the Box to hit the streets at under $200, we're now looking at a $229 suggested retail price. What could possibly have happened to make these drastic changes? We visited Boxee in person to get an explanation, and you'll find the surprisingly simple (yet NVIDIA-damning) answer right after the break. Boxee Box final hardware, hands-on

At a rendezvous in San Francisco, Avner Ronen told us the decision to abandon Tegra 2 was about performance and nothing more: "The major problem we had with the Tegra 2 was support for high-profile HD playback," he said. "You can do high-profile VC-1 with Tegra 2, but not H.264." It was a problem of bitrate, he told us, and while NVIDIA's dual-core Tegra T20 was apparently not up to the task, the team had internally tested Intel's CE4100 decoding streams at up to 90 megabits per second. The newly revamped Boxee Box is now capable of 1080p H.264 playback at 60fps, and... well, that's actually about it. While you'd think that gutting a system might involve a few more tweaks, we were informed that otherwise the Boxee experience is exactly the same, and and you can see for yourself just how little has changed hardware-wise in our gallery above. There's still hardware-accelerated Flash 10.1 playback, the same speedy UI and codecs, the same QWERTY-packing RF remote and all the same ports -- though it does have a freshly updated tally of over 400 apps, plus that new HTML5-compliant WebKit browser.

While we're on the subject of browsers, we took the opportunity to pester Avner about Hulu support -- as the cloak of Mozilla is obviously no longer shielding Boxee from harm -- and were told that yes, it's still possible for Hulu to block Boxee, though he hopes that everyone can just play nice. And speaking of peace offerings, Boxee's founder wants you all to know that the company's still working with NVIDIA, and that it just might consider using the Tegra 3 if or when it comes along. For now, you're getting Intel Inside® whether you like it or not, though it sounds (and felt in a brief test) like it doesn't make a lick of difference either way. If you're still sold on the idea and don't want to wait on our review, we're told US and Canadian citizens will find the Boxee Box for pre-order at Amazon and Best Buy respectively a little later today, while Europeans and Australians will have to wait for the formal November release.

They claim they switched to the intel chip because the Tegra 2 wasn't up to the job of processing 1080p H.264. They claim the intel chip will do it at 60fps.

I think I just might when they become available in November, they sound like a decent piece of kit.

I currently have Boxee running via Ubuntu on my main SFF Media PC underneath the Plasma and it works great, I like it better than all the other Media Centre solutions I have tried before and spent hours trying to get to work perfectly (Media Portal/WMC/XBMC etc...)

I have Boxee set up perfectly at the moment with remote and all my media organised perfectly with artwork etc and it boots straight into Boxee in seconds when I switch the PC on.

Would there be any advantage in buying the dedicated box over the solution I currently have?

Boxee really is stunning, and this hardware looks superb. Am sure there was a video of it posted on here not so long back.
I'll deffo be buying one, although I currently run it on my Acer Revo I'd like to have one for the kids living room.

I only recently entered the world of home entertainment and finally have xmbc setup on my revo just the way i want it. I have googled boxee and it looks pretty sweet but i have one question - currently i download loads of stuff via newsgroups automatically and then load into xbmc (didnt manage to get nzb and xbmc integration working) - in the case of boxee how would you download content automatically? or do you simply stream on demand?

Why would you have one of these instead of a Revo running XBMC? Does it just come down to personal prefference?

Well, it's cheaper for a start unless you already have a Revo? If so, and you're happy with the Revo and it plays 1080p without any issues then I'd stick with that.

Boxee have no plans to implement a newsgroup solution, but I suspect some enterprising individuals will come up with a sabnzbd app or something similar.

It's like XBMC (Boxee is based on XBMC) but with more of a slant on net based tv/video streaming.

Taken from Boxee forum looks like dvd as file fine not sure about blu-ray images will check

    http://forums.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=21263

Here's a list of BBox features that a lot of forum members are concerned about - some confirmed features are new to me, but maybe not be to all members and mods, but definately interesting

They were confirmed on the AVS forum by one or two Boxee Devs and caught my eye because some are very nice and may elevate the BBox to an envious position in the media player realm...
    ----------------------------------------------------

.wtv support - windows 7 media center TV recordings

embedded ASS/SSA subtitle inside MKV - subtitle fonts/colors/positioning (libass?) support

supports read/write from HFS+ formatted hard drive - (Mac)

supports playback of BD ISO - can select which title you want to play from a list - can also select different chapters - can also browse and play a specific file

supports full DVD menus either from an ISO or folders

go to a specific time in a video - ie...by typing 0020 to get to 20 minutes into the video

Boxee Box can down sample a DTS stream to Stereo output for scenarios not using a receiver

Boxee Box acts as a NAS via SMB (R/W)

[darcilicious]Vudu’s HD On-Demand Movie Service Arrives on Boxee (Windows, Mac, and Box)
    http://blog.boxee.tv/2010/10/28/vudu...ives-on-boxee/

Edit - by all means, please add any "confirmed" features to this thread - a lot of people are asking/wondering what the BBox has for features and this thread may help answer those questions - Mods, maybe even a 'sticky' ??

This is 'NOT' confirmed by anyone from Boxee - but Amazon's pre-order page says the BBox is "DLNA 1.5 (DMP)" supported

This is also 'uncomfirmed' - but the Boxee Box may be the 'love child' of Apple TV and GTV - sorry, just had to toss that in the mix after watching CNBC today - (;-)

Confirmed by Boxee team member on another forum...
The box has 4 audio modes:
Auto - Simultaneously output from HDMI, S/PDIF and analog. Audio is downmix to 2 channels PCM. This is the default
    HDMI - HDMI only
    S/PDIF - S/PDIF only
    Analog - Analog only
