    Yeah the speeds do seem to be exceeding what the NIC can handle - I can easily saturate the connection when doing file copies between Windows boxes, it does seem a bit slower using iSCSI connections to the MS Target so I'm going to tweak that next using some stuff from Technet / Starwinds.

    Managed to pick up another dual port NIC so what I'm going to do is try having all my iSCSI connections on another gigabit switch I picked up and use LAG and stack tweaks to see what this little box can handle - it's definitely keeping me out of mischief for a few days These little HP servers are alright! Got the important stuff like SABnzbd and Sickbeard on here now too, it's loads better now I can just stream everything off one place and not be dicking around with loads of little HDDs all the time!

    It's about time I brushed my skills up so I'm loving all this

    Ran some benchmarks on the software RAID5 volume and it's not performing bad at all tbh - nearly 300MB/sec on reads and over 100MB/sec on writes!

    I've filled the bugger already!

    Have to admit I'm tempted to get another while the deal is on (they're cheaper now too!)

    I've got 4x 2TB Samsung's in there and moved the stock drive up to the 5.25 bay via an adaptor kit - seems to run fine.

    I did upgrade the memory to 4GB and threw in a dual port gigabit HP NIC and it's been perfect, no bother at all

    Got to say I'm impressed with the speeds you got on the software raid. I remember recently benching an old poweredge 2600 with 3 x 10k scsi drives on a perc 4di and only getting around 30Mb/s. Was hoping to use this for a squid webcache but not sure of the point any more Have to say though a minimum latency of 0ms does make me suspect those figures a little.

    re iSCSI - I've never used this so maybe shouldn't comment but I know the recent dell servers come with nics with toe (tcpip offload engine), then you can upgrade these I think at around £80 to increase iSCSI performance.

    Never really noticed those latency figures - half wondering if that 8MB test file was getting stored in the disks cache causing that?

    Looking at the stats out of sabnzbd it does seem to be hitting sustained 100MB/sec writes when unpacking stuff - the temp stuff is written out to the system disk so it's not contending - for the price it's doing alright though.

    Some folks stick either the low profile PERC or HP Smart cards in these little boxes and use them, I was on a budget for this one though :/

    I was having a read the other day and some of the 10Gb iSCSI HBAs are showing some great performance stats!

    Just ordered one of these works out after cash back at 133 quid bargain if you ask me..

    quick question do you think its possible to run EXSi with freenas as a vm to give me some flexibility for testing other VMs at a later date

    My ultimate goal is to dump windows desktop to a VM and go Linux for day to day computing

    Yeah should be fine mate, which one did you order as a matter of interest?

    The CPU isn't the greatest but folks are running a few VMs no problem - I've currently got the host running Storage Server 2008 R2 SP1 with single instance storage enabled, sabnzbd, Sickbeard and TVersity and then have the Hyper-V role on there with a VM running an AD DC, DHCP & DNS and with that lot it's still never busy

    Also flipping between the MS iSCSI Target and the Starwinds one and still not stressing it

    I will have a play with it first before I commit my data to it

    I thinking of running vmware on the drive that comes with it then run freenass with direct access to the other 4 drives and then run a Linux server from another vm

    What memory did you use I feel a trip to aria coming on...

    Nice price there mate - bit cheaper than serversplus - dickhead here was working out VAT on the rebate price - not the full price - doh!

    Memory I bought from here - not a bad price at all for the buffered stuff (ignore the bit in the advert that says it's unbuffered - the stuff I received was definitely ECC )

    Jesus this is giving me grief anything linux based is giving me shit poor write speeds 28mbs sec ish just stuck windows 7 on getting upwards of 48mbs

    Is that in software RAID or are you using the built in RAID 0 / 1 controller?

    What's your config mate? Have you got the latest BIOS installed from HP and do you have write cache enabled in the BIOS?

    Got latest bios haven't checked the write cache yet, its just strange how windows works fine anything linux based has really slow write speed..

    Just waiting for the ram now 1gb in this is usless

    This project is on the back burner until I get the 4gb sticks going to try whs 2011 and windows storage server in a vm's to see what results I get

    Got this up and running now with storage server 2008 r2 essentials I can not find any other version !! Also read the windows home server 2011 is just a cut down version of storage server anyway, I'm waiting for my old nas to transfer over so I can do more testing but I'm more than happy for the money...

    Got any tips for getting the best out of the gigabit network also know where I can get storage server 2008 enterprise

    Storage Server Enterprise is actually just a bog standard Enterprise R2 installation then with a few packages like SIS and the Branding installed afterwards, I'll have a dig through for those if you like mate and stick them on an FTP?

    You'd just need the standard installation - I can't help with that one as my Technet has run out now :/

    I have just had one of these HP servers delivered.

    I am going to get more RAM from CCL at some point, then fill up the drives.
    I have access to technet so i can get all MS OS's so i am not sure what to install.

    I want to have a server for storage for my business stuff but it would be good to combine that with a media centre.

    So...!

    Would i be better to install VMWare then run a server OS and a Windows OS then sort all that out, or should i just run a Server OS and run XBMC on it.

    I have a media centre PC at the moment but i would rather not have media center and server and my MAC switched on the whole time..!

    Any opinions..????
