I went from a 400D to a 40D and couldn't believe the difference. The control system is totally diffeent and much more intuitive, more solid body and no need for a grip that I used to use with the 400D. You wll really notice the difference if you find a 40D instead. Add faster focus and more accurate focus on moving objects and it is an easy choice.

Cheers i definitely feel its the next step up for me as when i held one it just had that good camera feel, the quality of build seems much better, where as my rebel always felt abit toyish in my hands.

I also like the 6.5 frames a second double my old camera.

i went from a 450d to a 40d and the difference is enough
it's a better camera all round
i think a 50d would be a better choice though with it being slightly more up to date but to be honest apart from the pixel count ( which allows for tighter crops ) and the higher resolution screen there isn't a great deal of difference between em once there in your hand and taking photo's

400d to 7d here the difference is amazing, little more pricey than the 40d or 50d (was going to get the 50d) but I thought worth it in the long run

I went from the 400d to the 40d, still got the 40d, takes a bit of time to get used to but love it.

    I went from a 350D to a 30D [which I still have] to a 50D & the difference is like chalk & cheese

If your thinking of buying used check the shutter actuations. I believe the 40D/50D are rated to 100,000 actuations before the shutter mechanism needs replacing [around £200-£250]

..and at 6.5 frames/sec it's very easy to rack up a LOT of wasted shots

Make sure your get a spare battery or two as well. I dunno about the 40D, but my 50D eats batteries when using Live View
