Question Upgrading to Windows 7 on a netbook

    Hi guys,

I have an Advent 4211 with 2 gb of RAM. Recently, I have been thinking about upgrading to Windows 7 and ditching the pre-installed XP. I have read in many places that 7 runs quicker that XP on netbooks (?) and who am I to argue? So, I have a proper Windows 7 disc and was wondering what is the best method of installation - external optical drive or usb key? A friend said that the key method is the best but he has been known to talk shit in the past!

So, any advice will be gratefully received.

I have installed Windows 7 from a USB stick on to my Samsung NC-10 netbook and had no problems. Quicker than using external DVD too

Have done exactly the same, on the same model netbook - works a treat!

Thanks guys. Have you noticed any speed increased since going with 7??
Also, is any particular version recommended?

Yeah my netbook seems more responsive, boots quicker, and better battery life. Even put Win 7 on a older laptop, and it ran better on that than XP.

Flash your BIOS with the MSI Wind U100 BIOS ([Only registered and activated users can see links. ]) and you'll be able to install and activate whatever version of Windows you like as this BIOS has SLIC 2.1 I've got ultimate on my Sammy.

So, download and flash with the MSI fw, then install 7?

Right, I'd better make a move. Thanks guys.

Yep that'll be fine :-) You'll need to download the MSI certificate to activate whatever edition of Windows you install - I can give it to you but not sure whether it can be posted here?

EDIT -> pmat you've got a PM mate. I've also got Digital River download links to Windows 7 x86/x64 ISOs should one happen to lose their disc. Can they be posted too?

Heads up for anyone else with an Advent 4211 / MSI Wind U100:

    * There are newer revisions of the BIOS than 1.0e posted above but I'm not sure whether they include the SLIC 2.1 information for Windows 7 activation.
    * If you think your webcam isn't working, it is probably because you need to enable it using FN+F6! Windows should then detect it and install drivers automatically.
    * Proper wireless drivers to stop the connection dropping out are [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].

Done a clean install of Windows 7 on my Dell Mini over USB with no problems. I used this guide to create the USB, [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].
