Nintendo has announced that a European edition of Nintendo Direct will be streamed from its official website on Thursday, September 13 from 3pm (UK time)

The Nintendo Direct Wii U Preview will see Nintendo of Europe president Satoru Shibata "take a closer look at the upcoming Wii U console." The EU event is set to take place alongside a previously announced Wii U-focused press event in New York City on the same day.

It's understood the dual-events will reveal both the Wii U release date and launch price, with CVG sources pointing to an early December Wii U release date in Europe, with the North American launch likely to occur in November.

The 3DS and the Wii before it were both given US launch dates and confirmed software line-ups at similar NYC events held shortly before each machine's launch.

The price mystery

Previously key industry figures have indicated that Nintendo sees a sub-$300 (£190) price point as crucial for Wii U to succeed in North America, and NoA president Reggie Fils-Aime has said on record that he expects consumers to be "pleasantly surprised" by Wii U's launch price.

The manufacture of the Wii U's complex controller, which features a 6.2 inch touchscreen, camera, motion-sensing and NFC technologies, is seen as the main stumbling block in terms of pricing.

Speaking at this year's E3 in June, Fils-Aime said: "Nintendo believes in being a mass market product, so unlike our competitors when they've launched historical systems to maybe start at a really high price and work their way down, we don't believe in that.

"We want to launch at a price that's going to represent an ongoing great value. If you look at the Wii, we stayed at $250 for a really long time, so we're going to give that same level of thought to Wii U."
