Strange things are afoot at the circle K my friends

When Keanu Reeves mentioned to reporters at last week’s Toronto Film Festival that a new Bill and Ted movie, starring himself and Alex Winter, was in the works most people thought he was kidding. After all the last time the pair played the loveable slackers the actors was way back in 1989, twenty one years ago.

However, it turns out that Keanu was in fact deadly serious and Winter confirmed the movie in an interview with MTV. Although no date is set for filming yet and Winter says the script has to be finished he told MTV the project – still called Bill and Ted 3 at this point – is definitely something both he and Reeves intend to complete.

The movie will be focused on the original characters Alex said “We don’t want to make a cynical ‘here’s Bill and Ted – you guys are our kids, now YOU guys go be Bill and Ted and the franchise can live for another 25 years!’ It’s not that. It’s a straight up, what’s the funniest and most surprising take on where Bill and Ted would be right now if we stopped back in on them? That’s what we’re doing.”

One of the problems that has to be overcome is the absence of the movie’s other central character the time travelling Rufus, who was played by the late, great George Carlin.

“We’re working our way through it right now,” Winter explained. “It’s really complicated. He was such a big part of the spirit of the originals, and we’ve been trying to be clever about making a new one that can handle the Carlin issue. It’s actually stopped us in the past – why do it without Rufus? We’ve been delicate about moving around him.”

The first two Bill and Ted movies – Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure and Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey – made a huge star of Reeves. Alex Winter chose to head away from acting into directing though he has recently returned to acting of sorts as the voice ‘of King Mole Man’ on the Adult Swim show, Saul of the Molemen.
