fitting a bath (help)

after getting a price for a plumber to fit a bath (£90 + VAT) i thought sod that ill do it my self.

Basically no tiles to worry about as theres beading that goes around hiding where the tiles start (about an inch above bath)

this is what i expect to do,

1. take all panels off
2. rip beading off
3. turn water off at hopefully stop tap valve and remove taps
4. take top waste and bottom waste plugs out
5. unscrew all fittings that hold bath in to loosen the bath.
6. remove bath
7. tidy up what ever shit is there
8. get new bath in
9. by this stage im really hoping my old top and bottom waste plugs will screw in and fit
10. sort bath out, level it and make sure all is tight and safe
11. fit taps.
12. fill bath and hope for the best!
13. fit new white beading and silicone where it needs to go
14. put panels back on



Now is this all correct? it sounds very easy lol. im using all the old fitments, and i think as long as i get the same size bath all should line up and the plumbing not be a problem as the old holes will match the new?

Any advice please give, need to change it as its bloody pink! ive lived with it for 2 years!

Oh and fit the taps BEFORE you put the bath in place.

Only problem should be aligning the trap. Im not a plumber but I managed to fit a whirlpool bath earlier this year. Plug hole was toward the center of the bath so had to cut a new hole in the floor for the trap also avoiding the support beam. Should be a simple swap for your new bath.

Well i feel ripped of after paying over £700 to have mine installed.. but that did include ripping the old suite out, all tiles & some structural work electrics .. pluming.. la la la

Plumbing is easy until it goes wrong, i've had quite a few jobs where people have tried to fit there own stuff and phoned me up in a panic because they have no loo or can't turn the water back on.

Do u honestly think if you start this and can't finish the plumber will still only charge £90. That's even if he will do it mate.
It's one thing fitting the bath mate it's another thing to fit it right and ensure a water tight seal around the bath.
Also I would replace the waste and trap.

It's one of those jobs, it's not hard......until something goes wrong!! The chances of the waste and taps being in exactly the same place to me seems unlikely but they shouldn't be overly hard to adjust. Even so £90 doesn't sound that bad tbh for a couple of hours work and messing around.

Was gonna post exactly this, turning off at cold will still leave enough water in your hot tank to cause mayhem. Unless you don't have a hot tank of course. I'm not a plumber but common sense would dictate turn off boiler to avoid running it with no water going in, turn off cold water, then turn on downstairs hot tap until it stops.

I'd say the £90 quote could be worth checking out - is that even a real plumber? I'm thought it was about that just to get one to drive to your house, bearing in mind they have years of working for barely anything to do an apprenticeship and have a van and a load of tools to maintain, £90 sounds incredibly cheap for several hours and lots of kerfuffle. I think it might just be a guy who knows how to fit baths giving quotes out for work.

As long as you are 100% confident about fitting the taps back on, I don't see how you could really fuck it up though. Even if you 100% botch the bath part of it, you can just put the taps back in place and then turn your water back on and live normally (sans bath) until you have time to have another go.

You'll feel like a right bell end if you can't get the taps back on and end up calling an expert in though. I did that when trying to fix the lock on my mum's car door when I was (a lot) younger. She pretty much ended up having to get a new door, the worst moment I remember was half way through when the window glass just suddenly fell into the door for no reason. In the end we had to duct tape the window and door together and she climbed in the passenger side to drive to the next town to get it sorted. Years later the car is now an old banger belonging to my brother and the central locking still doesn't work from that lock.

The hot water comes out of the top of the cylinder guys so he only needs to turn the values of from the cold water tank and then turn hot and cold taps on just to drain down whats in the pipes

last time i did a bath it was a straight swap. acrylic bath where woman fell in it and busted a hole in it (big girl) im not advertised as a plumber but will do quite a bit. took 90mins to take out old bath. remove fittings, redress new bath, fit and seal. it was a small pokey athroom too. not much room to move. if your not 100% confident though, just pay the money. as said before, itd not worth the hassle if something goes wrong and you dont know how t go about fixing it. good luck

Have been recently been thinking of changing my whole suite out. Looks like it would cost me £220 delivered for a basic set with taps etc from B&Q
Local rag has adverts in it for complete bathroom from £390 fitted.

Personally, I'll have a go at most things but the potential for going tits up with leaks and the water damage, I'll be happy to pay £170. My time and temper is more valuable.

When you level it make sure the plug is lower so any remaining water drains away. Sounds daft but we had a bath fitted that was molded level (as in the bottom of the bath ran true with the top).

I do this sort of stuff myself - can't be ar*ed to mess about with trades unless I know them. Just keep a good look out when you turn the water back on - if it leaks turn it back off again and put the problem/s right!

Go for it and save £90 quid and the risk of a hard sell for an anti lime scale magnet or something similar

Now you mention it I knew that, I've seen a few diagrams when researching how solar tubes work. I'm confused though as the hot water works for ages when our water goes off, presumably refilling from the big cold tank in the loft. How does turning the cold water off effect that? Does it come out of that from the top too?

There's a stop cock above the cylinder that cuts the feed from the header.
