Default External Hard Drive Password problem

A mate of mine has just called and cannot get access to his external drive due to a password being on it which he cannot remember. He has a clue to the password but still cannot remember it. Is there anything you can do to reset the password.

I wasnt even aware that passwords could be used on external drives.

    Any help appreciated.

How's it protected with a password? If it's Microsoft's BitLocker it should have given him a password reset code when he first encrypted the drive... Might be worth looking through any docs he's got in case he saved it in there somewhere... Might also be worth checking to see if it's on a scrap of paper stuck in a drawer in a computer desk too if he has one...

    Assuming it's BitLocker of course...

right he has given me the drive and It's a Wester Digital smartware drive. It has a password on it and the hint still doesnt jog his memory. Apparently the password system is built into the firmware of the drive.

Anybody know how to brute force one of these?
