Default Redundancy - Am I'm over the moon

The local brewery who I worked for (St Austell) are having a redistribution of resources, or that's what the company speil was they gave us last week when they announced that 2 jobs at our depo had to go. Spent the week umming and ahhing as what to do. But took the plunge yesterday in my skills matrix interview to opt for voluntary redundancy with effect from yesterday.
So this morning I am now starting out as a part time house husband and full time photographer, which is something I have been working towards for the past few years and with a solid set of bookings into 2012 things are looking ok. To say that I am happy is a bit of an understatement, the payout was a nice bonus and now I am my own boss.

Nice one Matt. Big decision but you're a top notch photographer so work won't be hard to come by.

Good luck with it all though.

    Very jealous btw.

Well done mate, freedom is a wonderful thing. Just don't grow your business too much, having your own staff is a fucking nightmare.

Cheers guys, am under no illusions that it will be an easy ride having run the family business for 13 years previously to being a drayman, but I am determined to make this work for me and my family.

Willp - Can't spend anything yet as my new spending budget doesn't kick in until next March, but with a bag full of l series glass and enough speedlights now, not much else is needed.

CJ - Staff are a nightmare besides the only guy i use is free lance, so no worries there. Besides I think having staff / other togs work for me would take away from the reason that people book me. Because it would be someone elses vision and style not mine. The wife does some menial work for me now and then but can tell her off if needed with fear. Yeah right.

Great news Wingnut and good luck for the new career (not that you'll need it).

Just as a heads up with the redundancy payment, I'm sure you know the first £30,000 is tax free, but you will need to inform people like the Working Family Tax Credit office because it does count as income.

I pray for redunancy, which in my company would mean spending the full 3 months of your notice period on garden leave + 6 months worth of severence pay and a few other benefits (e.g. career advice and job placement services). I know several people who've taken voluntary redunancy and most have never looked back.

Anyway, enjoy the break from work and the chance to recharge and re-focus.

Threaten to release the results of a research programme that proves a non-prescription medicine is, in fact, harming the population at large and is responsible for at least 250,000 suicides.

That'll get you at least a years salary.

Whistle blowers and industrial espionage are treated with contempt here in Switzerland. You'd probably receive a lighter sentence for molesting children than you would for harming Swiss industry. The last person to blow the whistle on a pharma company was sent to jail (on dubious charges) and whilst locked up his wife committed suicide because she could no longer cope. He came out of the clink a very broken man.

Not really worth an extra 3 months pay IMHO
