Voted Intel as I'm currently running a E8400, but AMD compete very well at lower price points, so would happily run one of their CPU's too.

I run both an Intel Quad 2.4 and an AMD X2. I'm happy with both but if pushed I'd go with the Intel.

Never owned an AMD so can't really comment on them. I voted Intel simply because that's all I've ever had.

    Define differences?

The architecture behind the opposing CPU's is very different, but they're all capable of doing exactly the same job at the end of the day, what exactly do you want to know, or need a new CPU for?

performance differences. stability. which one will last the longest (do cpu's fail after so long? i dont know)

going to build a desktop and the cpu is a starting point. anyone want to list me a spec for a pc if i give the details of what its going to be used for. rang a guy last week who is charging £100 to build one for me. a lot of friends said this was quite dear. or do you think its reasonable

Most modern CPU's will be extremely stable if run at stock speeds, obviously less so if highly overclocked.

£100 doesn't seem too unreasonable, but it's a fairly easy task to accomplish yourself, and very satisfying knowing you've done all the hard work yourself, and £100 goes a long way towards components!

Happy to you a spec if you give us an idea what you'll be using it for.

    In my experience AMD!

Intel tend to be more focused towards Applications and programming.
AMD are more geared towards gaming and video rendering.

I prefer AMD because the GPU associated with them are better IMO than Intel's partner NVidia.

It doesnt always go this way, but it pretty much the norm seeing as AMD now own ATI.

I have been explained the difference as I used to be a Laptop salesman, but the difference is minimal for the Home User.

For performance differences, look up benchmark tests for any two cpu's you wish to compare and you will see the difference.

For reliablity I reckon the rest of the pc will make more of a difference - for example at work we have two poweredge t110 site servers which are moody - I've had to go out a few times because they sometimes won't come up after a power failure. Never had this with the amd based t105's, but then again, we only get this on the t110's, none of our other intel boxes - hence my opinion both are reliable enough for most uses, the rest of the bits make more of a difference.

main uses for the pc will be 3d modelling software, plenty of rendering mixed in too. other applications like photoshop but that doesnt seem to use much. possibly a bit of gaming too.
I want a fast processor, good graphics card and at least 500gb hard drive. dont know much about memory. will be running 2 full 1920 x 1080 screens so need two outputs for them. needs to have a decent wireless card for the N router i have. Windows 7 64bit OS. dvd drive. most of my work is mouse orientated and im not sure what mouse to go for.
I can spend up to about 900 quid but that includes the screens. have priced them already and its coming to 240 for the pair so there is about £660 left for everything at most - trying to keep the price down though. any spec recommendations will be gladly appreciated

My personal favourite at the moment is:
Gigabyte H55M-USB3 MATX mobo - This has won many awards, I have bought around 10 of them this year! It has HDMI and DisplayPort outputs, 2xUSB3 ports, eSATA, 4 memory banks up to 16GB total RAM, LGA1156 CPU which will take intel i3/i5 (not sure about i7).

I have a i5-750 (apparently this is very overclockable!) This is the only quad-core i5 CPU (apart from varients like 760). You must have a GPU for this to run. Cheaper systems I have been building use a i3-530 which has onboard GPU so paired with the H55 intel graphics on board means no GPU is required.

    4GB DDR3 RAM, I have G.Skill but OCZ have a 2x2GB kit for £60.

This case is phenominal value for money, it is incredibly well built, has all the tooless parts:
    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/172779

But I have an Antec case myself.

I am running Corsair PSUs but you could get a modular PSU if your budget permitted to save space in your build.

1TB Samsung F3 HDD will be about £45, or if your budget allowed get a SSD for OS and the samsung/a NAS for storage.

I use my PC for the odd bit of photoshop but the rest is downloading or office work. You will need input from gamers or graphic designers when it comes to what GPU to buy and if my recommendation would be enough for you.

Samsung OEM SH-S223 drives will be cheap and effective.

PCI Edimax 300mbp/s Wireless N card from Scan is about £25.

This is just a quick list of what I have been using with no problems at all, please research if it will suit your needs or not. My system is the nuts for what I use it for.

I've got a Phenom II 720 for games etc. & E5200 for my HTPC. Upgrade wise, the AMD PC has been better value - started out with a single core Athlon 3800+ (AM2) 4 years ago & finished with the Phenom II.
