Default USB pen drive won't allow deleting

I've got a few 4gb pen drives that I use but for some reason my acer netbook will not allow me to delete any files from it. It just says that the file I want to delete is in use and that I should close any programs using it. I've tried a whole host of different usb drives and it's always the same. My netbook is running on XP by the way. Any ideas?

    Thanks

Try formatting them or deleting them using a different PC... then format them.

Get hold of HP usb formatter (google it) or you could try to do it in SAFE MODE

    [snip - wrong version]

here is a version from softpedia - they ain't gonna allow such threats surely..

Get this a lot if you don't use the 'Safely remove hardware wizard' and just pull it out of the USB port...
