Default Best method to access iMac at home from office

    Guys,

I have the i7 iMac 27" at home, and I would love to be able to access this from the office to kick off downloads etc and generally do housekeeping ... I've installed TeamViewer free version, and made a note of the ID and set a password, but it seems everytime I get to the office the Mac has go to sleep, and nothing I can do will wake it .. I have i'm sure turned off the power save sleep mode but still it happens.. so my question is what is everyone using to access their Mac from a remote location ..

Any help would be appreciated as it would be great to access it from the office ... to save time ..

Think Logmein do a free version, although not sure if they do a OSX version ..

    Cheers in advance
    DTM

I use LogMeIn and have done for a very long time.

    Very happy with it.

You should be able to stop it in the system settings, but Caffine will keep the system awake for you.

I used this on my iMac and MacBook Pro ... I set up a hotcorner to turn off the LCD.

It does depend on your organisation. If you have proxy servers then you may have TCP tunneling over HTTP disabled and therefore not be able to use these products. I look after a number of proxy servers for organisations where they have this enabled. Stops people getting around filtering and accessing TCP applications where you can tunnel.

gotomypc.com offer a free 30 day trial and it works on MACOS so it might be worth trying it out first. Of course you also have the problem of paying then.

The other option (My fave) is to use Bitvise Tunnelier to SSH tunnel over TCP to your machine and then you can use whatever you want. Bonus for this method is that it's free. I can even play games such as World of Warcraft from the office using this method and Sockscap to enable applications that don't have native proxy support. Quality piece of software in my opinion and as long as you have an SSH server running on your machine at home your are quids in. Of course this will only work if TCP tunnelling is allowed too.

The other option noone had mentioned is if you use a router that is capable of being a vpn server. Then you can basically set an private tunnel through the internet to your home network - even if your pc is switched off, you can wake it remotely and use vnc (I know bugger all about macs but I assume there has to be some free vnc software and wol capability).

    Hi guys,

A friend has asked me to sort out some problems he is having with his pc, would logmein free be the ideal solution? he's got a problem with Windows live mail that i'm sure i can sort out remotely.

Should i set it up on my pc here and then get him to set it up as me on his machine? Will this allow me to fix probs on his pc or do i need the pro solution to run programs?

This is what do. My I trust the people that I help out with so just share my login details with those needing help to set up their PC.

You cab configure a Access Code for each machine so that even if someone logs into your LMI they can't access a computer.

I use newsgroups to download on my mac at home, using SABnzbd you can access the web server from work to add nzb's etc.

If I need to do anything more I use a VNC app on my iPhone. (OSX has VNC server built-in btw)
