    Tech Kinect

Spent a few hours yesterday testing the Kinect at home, due to legal reasons i can't disclose any specific details about it but what i can tell you is that it's bloody brilliant!!!!!!!

As far as I am concerned it is well worth the £130 release date asking price and I think it will surpass a lot of people’s expectations as it did mine.

Come the 10/11/2010, Wii and Playstation Move owners move aside because the Kinect is miles better than both!

The game disk that comes with the Kinect was spot on, no lag what so ever and i was extremely impressed!
I MAY HAVE played a couple of beta's that had a couple of lag issues but they are 'beta' versions so i guess that is to be expected. Overall far more precise than the Wii. The Playstation move is pretty damn good with precision but the advantage the kinect has is that you don't have to hold any controllers with big daft balls on the end of them!

so was this in a room with furniture or any bits and pieces lying around or was it an empty space?

I'd read you need to have a big clear space for it?

It must be the beta's that a colleague of mine has played. He's part of the Microsoft beta team and gets to test loads of Microsoft products before they go live. He really wasn't impressed with the technology, says it had lots of lag and the games were not appealing. He would have given it away by now but the hardware has been locked to his machine.

I think if people enjoy the Wii and the PS Move they will LOVE this, like i say the disc you get with the Kinect is spot on and i had absolutely no issues with lag or anything like that, only the beta's i may have played.
To say the games aren't very appealing, well i suppose each to their own on that one.

As for things furniture and things laying around, Glass tables can be a problem because of reflection issues but things like couches and ornaments cause no issues at all from my experience.
No real issues with the space either.

I think the first wave of games will be very Wii-ish, simple and quirky, not "real" games as such with any depth or story or whatever.

However, the thought of Kinect, with a 3D Projector and good 3D-enabled games...
    Talk about immersion....I can't wait!

this is what i don't quite 'get' about kinect, almost every game style is more immersive with a solid button type interface, holding a wii/move controller in the style of a gun, with a trigger which acts like a real trigger is surely more 'realistic' than anything that can be done on kinect. Considering the 360 market is so heavily weighted towards FPS style games, I cant see how than can satisfy that part of the market. the only genre i can see that could work on Kinetic are sports games, and even then, it would probably work better with something in your hand for any ratchet/bat sports.

The current demos which show some guy deflecting balls with his body and some divs with their arms out navigating a dingy down some rapids dont really do much for me, but only time will tell.

As far as I'm concerned this is the way to play video games and if I wanted to be leaping round the living room like a twat I would buy a Jane Fonda work out video.

I definately don't think Kinect is a replacement for playing games with a pad - the pad is just too important and has too many functions to be replaced by something that has no pad at all.

What I'm more interested in is (as I said above).. 5 yrs time, with 3D becoming the norm and 3D games taking advantage of the tech to just up the immersion levels of certain games.

    ie.
    Kinect + 3D Projector onto a 12ft wall...
Something like Heavy Rain, where your walking around, talking to the characters, looking "into" the world and feeling part of it cos it's all in immersive 3D.
Imagine BioShock, Resident Evil or Condemned...where your literally "inside" a scary as fuck house/mansion/forest and having to survive, pick shit up, knock things over, look round corners etc.
    * Looking round corners would need the head tracking technology that was shown aaaages ago *

Admittedly the games will have to be made for 3D/Kinect/TrackIR etc and they will have to be done properly and not the usual "tack it on at the end" the way most games are atm, but it's just gonna be a matter of time before your in your front room feeling like your part of something else.

I am a sucker for narrative driven games, so this is what I want to happen, but I can definately see a need for a controller of some sort to help navigate round these worlds when using Kinect.
I don't fancy having to walk on the spot to move around!

    PS. HD 3D Porn...lovely!
