    Help Exchange 2010 problem

    Hi all,

I'm hoping there's an exchange expert out there. I've just setup an exchange 2010 server, seems to be setup fine, OWA works, i can login, send + receive to the domains fine and dandy, all is well.

However, outlook won't connect to it at all. I try adding new account, click the "check name" and it comes back saying cannot connect? Now i know it's not a problem with outlook as I have access to another exchange server which works correctly (but not one I setup) from outlook.

So I must be missing something obvious, any advice on where to start looking?

    Thanks

Still no joy, have now tried 3 different machines on my network, 1 of which was outlook 2007, neither of which can connect.

However both my iPhone and iPad can connect fine!?

Microsoft Exchange RPC Client Access is this service running also ensure all other services are information store service etc.
Also try a restart MS Exchange Active Directory Topology service.

have you manually tried creating the profile?

Yes, the rpc client access service is running, i've rebooted the whole server too but made no difference.

    Steps i've taken so far

*) Used autodiscovery and created profile manually, made no difference.
*) Tried diff ISP (connected through 3g on mobile, made no difference)
*) Put PC's on my network in DMZ, made no difference
*) Disabled windows firewall, made no difference
*) Connect find through iPad & iPhone, suspect they're using activesync not rpc http
*) OWA works 100%, again no rpc involved though
    *) Tried outlook 2010 + 2007, no difference
*) Rebooted exchanger server machine, no difference

I'm at a complete loss as to why outlook won't connect, but iphone/ipad works perfectly?

    Thanks mate

Firstly are the workstations on the same network?
Can you ping the Exchange server from workstation?
Have you tried entering the full domain name of the exchange server on the workstations?

1.. Yes, all machines i've tried are on same network here, although I've also tried connecting using 3G via my mobile phone to eliminate any possibility of it being a problem on my network.

2.. Yes, I can ping the exhange server fine, OWA also works fine

3.. yes, i've tried a manual configu with using the FQN of the exchange server

I believe so, because both the iPhone and iPad found it first time. However when I try the autodiscover mode from outlook, I get a green tick for "Establish network connection" and "Search for [email] server settings" then it hangs for a bit before giving me the error about not being able to connect.

hmm check DNS and hostnames ensure these are correct.

try pinging the host name for the exchange server see if an ip address comes back?

They must be as I can ping them and they resolve to the correct IP's

It must be something to do with RPC I reckon, as the ipad and iphone get their ip's from same router as my laptop, that cant connect either (outlook 2007) but they can. I suspect they use activesync for it whereas outlook tries RPC.

I just dont know how to diagnose it from there onwards

Just found out that by holding CTRL and right-clicking on icon for outlook you get some special test options.

Anyway, i've just checked and confirm autodiscover is definitely working using the "Test Email autoconfiguration" option.

Connection status just hangs on "connecting", never gets any further

Trying that URL gives me this error after autodiscover (when using outlook anywhere)

    Host name mail.pocketstars.co.uk does not match any name found on the server certificate CN=pocketstars.co.uk, OU=Domain Control Validated - FreeSSL, OU=See www.rapidssl.com/resources/cps (c)10, OU=GT48013067, O=pocketstars.co.uk, C=GB, SERIALNUMBER=[removed]
which i'm assuming should only throw a client security error on outlook about invalid certificate, not stop a connection?

I just read it could be an SSL problem.. wildcard ssl certificate did not work for exchange 2010 but did for 2007 but SSL UCC certificate worked fine as they are different to outlook 2007 etc.

do I have to use a signed certificate? Can I not just self-sign one? I know i'll get a security warning on my client, but that's fine, it's just a server for me to play with so don't really need all the security?

OK thanks to a mate of mine we've narrowed it down to RPC over HTTP not working. My ISP seems to block all port 135 traffic (RPC), but shouldnt i be connecting over 80/443 for RPC over HTTP?

Yes you can use self signed. Yes it uses 80/443 for rpc over http

    http://certcollection.org/forum/topi...access-server/

maybe this can help change ports or explain

If your using self cert have you tried this?

I created a self signed certificate from my server that has Certificate Services on it and it works just fine for RPC and everything else. Just remember to go to https://yourownserver.com/Certsrv and click on download the certificate chain, then install the certificate chain and you'll be fine for RPC over HTTP with Outlook 2003 & 2007. Don't just do the https: to your server and try to click on "install certificate" you need to actually get your self CA into the trusted roots, not just the certificate. The only thing that paying for a "real" certificate from a CA like Verisign or Thawte gets you is that they are in the trusted roots by default and you don't have to add them. If you meant that you have to run the enable-ExchangeCertificate for the imported certificate and specify the services (SMTP, IMAP, POP, Unified Messaging, IIS) that the cert is for, then that was already the case.

I'm trying to create a new site in IIS for all the exchange stuff, all bound to a single IP then create a cert on that site, however it's proving a right ballache. If I change the site to anything but "All IP's" for the listen then th exchange console or powershell just don't work at all.

How you server geeks manage all this stuff day-in, day-out is beyond me
