The next major upgrade to the Android OS, Gingerbread, which every-man and his dog is betting will be Android 3.0, despite no official confirmation, could bring with it video calling features.
The revelation was uncovered by lover of all things droid-like, Android and Me, who questioned the top dog, Andy Rubin.
"We support video chat today, with Google Talk Video", he said. "It works on the desktop. Whether that can be re-purposed and made appropriate for sipping bandwidth for mobile, it’s an exercise that’s underway".
This admission that Google is working on a solution, coupled with the fact that many Android phones (such as the Samsung Galaxy S and the HTC Evo 4G) are now being produced with front-facing cameras, is more than a strong hint that video calling could be on the horizon.
Android and Me also spoke with some Tegra 2 hardware partners and was told that Gingerbread is going to "change the way we use our phones".
Hmmm, very intriguing. It seems that Apple may well have kicked off a video-calling revival with FaceTime.
Maybe we weren't ready for it, when 3 introduced it back in 2003.
