Default Car insurance for the unemployed

Just want to say a big fuck you to all the car insurance company's out there who wack up their prices just because your unemployed.

Ive had my license now for a few months and have recently been offered a car for a good price. It's only a 10 year old Fiesta but it's better then nothing right?

Naming no names here but one company quoted me just over £1000 for fully comp insurance. Not bad I thought. But, because ive not got a job at the moment, if I put down a job as a admin assistant or something, it would be only £600.. what the fuck!?

How can they justify this? Money grabbing, fat cat fuck wits

If you're unemployed you might be on the roads more? Either to/from job interviews or as you aren't at work you may be travelling during the days? And did you try to pay monthly or all upfront? They may be worried about not receiving their money.

This is an assumption, not the reason why they charge more.

My mum is an insurance broker, I asked her for you and although she agrees they do sting the unemployed but she isn't sure why. She doesn't work for a firm which provides car insurance specifically though, they sell on behalf of the underwriters.

Both monthly + yearly quotes are way over priced. Bloody stupid imo. Yes, we may use the roads more to get to interviews (once in a blue moon at the moment). But it's just taking money out the pockets of people who need it most.

Unemployed people must be classed as higher risk than admin assistants, there's nothing more to it. Different occupations and lifestyles carry different risk profiles in the same way that different cars do.

as mike says it's all driven off stats, not trying to screw over people who can least afford it. There's a fair chance people will put down unemployed rather than self employed or maybe unemployed people are more likely to chance a spot of insurance fraud. Whatever the reason is it's basically unemployed folk cost the insurance company more so get charged more - in the words of one company, simples.
