Backup just contacts

Ok I just got an iPhone 4 , prev had a 3G. Restored my backup and everything ok but one feature remains broken , I cannot mms photos the option has gone. It had carried this bug over in the backup as It had just started doing this on my 3G.
Anyway I guess I need to do a full restore but I need to backup contacts nothing else- is there any easy to do this ?

Just to check mate, is MMS enabled in the Settings applet?

I had similar with my 4 when restored from a 3GS backup - there was an app that brought it back though, will try and find it now

This was the one - I had the MMS icon missing in both the text message window and it also wasn't available in Settings - Messages - MMS Messaging.

Installing the package above via Cydia fixed that - although I'm not sure whether you're jailbroken already?

If you do still want to start again with the phone you should just be able to hook it up to the computer, let it back everything up so that all the contacts are copied over, then just restore it via iTunes and then set it up as a new phone at which point you can then sync contacts back from the PC / Mac to the phone - that's exactly how I've just redone mine tonight!

i think its cos my 3g was jaibroken thats caused it yes. no there is no option in the applet, its totally missing
the 4 isnt jailbroken yet , so i would like to do what u just suggested yes. how do i sync contacts when its set up as a new phone? was worried id lose the lot !

It's one of the first steps mate - when you pick to set it up as a new phone it automatically copies contacts, notes, applications etc back to the handset so it's good to go

Just make sure you've done one last backup beforehand and double check that the contacts are all on your Mac / PC - if it's a PC they're usually in the Windows Address Book I think or they'll be in a contacts folder as pcf files on Vista / 7?

You will lose your messages though - the only other way around this is to jailbreak the handset now, and install OpenSSH and copy out the /private/var/mobile/Library/SMS/sms.db file manually via SSH and then when you've set it up as a new phone you have to jailbreak that, install OpenSSH and then push it back and then update the permissions of the file so that the mobile user & group are the owner and it needs 644 permissions
