iPad-Is it worth it?

My son wants one for Christmas. He's just started at high school and we're thinking of a laptop, is the iPad a reasonable alternative or would those of you who have an iPad offer some sound advice (regarding WP etc. Printing, internet and other things we tae for granted with PC's)?

A Laptop will be better for School work mate. Even better get him a Netbook and an iPod touch which would cost about the same price as an iPad.

+1for netbook or laptop, ive got an ipad but its just to dam restrictive for doing anything productive

+1 for netbook/laptop. The wife has one and it's great for casual web browsing and stuff like that but not for doing work on.

+1 netbook too (my ipad's for sale in the BST

), ipad is fine for surfing as long as you don't want flash, but he'll get much more out of a netbook and an ipod tbh, especially if you're hoping he's going to do any school work on it.

Netbook for school stuff. ipad is an addition to laptop\netbook not an alternative.

He'll need a laptop of some kind, iPad won't cut it, a MacBook is ideal but any laptop is fine for schoolwork and the cheaper the better!

Deffo ipad is an expensive luxury item in addition to existing desktop laptops in the house.I read comics on mine every night which was the sole purpose it was brought, without that id of got shot of it a long time ago.S to answer your question laptop netbook for schoolwork is definitely the way to go.

Defo a laptop. I got a netbook and the kids hate it (the screen is too small for their coursework) so ended up getting 15" laptops for them.

But to throw something else into the mix. You could get him a cheap laptop and one of these guys for christmas (they should be shipping in the next two weeks):
