I've just put my sons 60Gb PS3 in for a repair estimate and been told that it may need a new motherboard at a cost of £130. Are new motherboards actually available for 60Gb models or will I be getting a second hand or reworked board.

Think if I were you mate I would flog the old one on eBay for spares and get yourself a nice shiny new Slim one. £130 for repair is a joke price !
I was also offered the option of a trade in against a new slim. I'll probably go for that. Thanks.
Forgot to mention; the quote was from a repair shop. They haven't actually tested it yet. It was more like a guess-timate.
Hang on..whats wrong it? I might purchase it
Works ok for short time then screen starts to flicker and then games start to freeze. Blue ray movies work fine so I'm sure it's not the laser. I followed part of Gilksys on-line guide, just to partially strip it, renewed the heatsink paste but still the same. Before I was also losing icons on the XMB but I seem to have cured that.
A fortnight ago they told me it was a faulty hard drive and quoted £50 to repair or a £90 trade-in against a new console. I thought I'd save a few quid a fit the HDD myself. This of course didn't cure the fault. They're now talking around £130 to repair or £50 to trade. I wish I had took the trade-in offer a fortnight ago.

I've tried other cables and tv's. To me it seems as if something is heating up and then failing. I think that if it was the cable or tv that was causing it, it would be flickering from start-up and as I said before, blue ray movies and DVDs work perfectly.
This may sound stupid but is it possible that games are increasing the load on a part or component in the PS3 that blue ray or DVDs don't, as some games work longer that others. It doesn't like Medal of Honor Airborne or Call of Duty.
Sounds to me like your repair shop are after some easy money if they are offering you a trade in. I'd contact Sony and see what they say. You might find it's cheaper to go direct to them (And get a better service) than some spotty teenager with a soldering iron

I don't think sony will touch it. It's been repaired before and the void sticker has been removed. Will sony still accept it?

Sony will charge a minimum of £130 I believe ! Remember the YLOD fiasco ?
£130 for a Sony fix or £150 for a repair shop... I know what I'd go with.
