The money you earn in London reflects the commute. Or so it did when I used to work there.

If your employer is paying a crap wage, time for a career change!

When you say 'allowed' do you mean you think it's something your entitled too? Nope!

BTW - I used to pay £430pm when I commuted!

According to HM Revenue Customs See page 6 (and page 11).

If your based at the manchester office and get shipped to London for a week then you can ask for travel costs to be reimbursed as it isn't what you signed up for unless you knew a week a month you would work in London. But if you live in Manchester and your job is in based in London then no, you took the job based there and knew what you were in for.

I just got back from Berlin, 6.20 euros for a day travel card that works on every bus, train and underground in the entire city. I'd suggest moving there.

It's something that needs to be in your contract or a document referenced in your contract like an employee handbook. Mine has a thing about full expenses for short trips in hotels that let you claim pretty much everything vital you spend for the duration (restaurants, taxis , parking and fuel basically). It also has one for working away long term about the company paying rent on a flat directly and a set allowance per day to buy stuff for the flat like meals and things.

I think there is something statutory about getting reimbursed for any work away from your usual office, unless you know from the start that you are going to be working away. Anything else is just what the company chooses to pay for.
