2700 ddr mem and athlon xp 2400+

I have just updated my system to the folowing

    Gigabyte ga-7vaxp
    512mb 2700 ddr
    athlon xp 2400+ cpu
    120mb Ibm hd
    ect....

When i set the memory in the bios to 333mhz and the cpu tp 133
windows xp just keeps coming up fatal error when i put them both on auto in bios it is fine.

Do you have to have a fsb 333mhz athlon xp to run with the 333 2700 ddr memory ???

Wasn't told if so when i put this lot.............

What are all the ratios this system should be set on , or is it best to leave things on auto.

Also notice using the system monitor that comes with mb that the cpu is usually at 52c temp , this seems pretty hot....

Why are you trying to put the RAM at 333 MHz effective whilst running the CPU at 266 MHz effective?

Is there any particular reason for this?

If it runs set to Auto fine (and you aren't trying to overclock) then just leave it set to Auto.

When the BIOS settings are set to auto, is the CPU running at 133MHz (266 MHz DDR) and the RAM likewise? If so, don't worry about it. The extra headroom on the memory is good for if you are going to overclock the CPU, As the FSB/memory timings/PCI+AGP etc all increase at the same time (unless you can set the FSB independantly, which I don't think the Gigabyte boards can).

If you want to use the full capacity of the RAM, then unlock and lower the multiplier (or do the 2400+ CPU's come multiplier unlocked?) and increase the FSB to 166 MHz (333 MHz efective DDR).

As for the heat, that is within the limits of the Athlon processors, but if you want to overclock that puppy, I suggest you get some better cooling first.

    Thanx m8.

All sorted now it seems when i enable top performance in the bios the systems crashes when when disabled it is all fine.

If you have the time and are willing to do so, read this article written by Hat Monster over on the Ars Technica forums.

It is a well thought out and well constucted article that might help you set your BIOS to run at a higher setting with a little tweaking.
