Even the writer states that his is an "extreme example" its just illustating how far off students are in estimating the relative sizes of countries and land masses!!

Africa is used just as a particular illustration of gross underestimation of its size as a land mass!

Its also to do with how much the Mercator projection distorts Africas size in relation to say Greenland and its upon maps such as this that many students base their guesses.



Here Greenland and Africa look roughly the same size...Africa is actually 14 times larger than Greenland.

Rubbish. If thats the case, why not just show an atlas with Africa the same size as Greenland, then compare that with an atlas with Africa 14 times the size of Greenland? That would have a much better and more worthy impact.

Instead we're presented with a map of a continent containing lots of countries. Like any fucking map of a continent should do.
