Yesterday afternoon I went to put roast in the oven and when I turn the gas, it lights but after 10 secs I release the knob and the gas cuts off.
Anyone know what the problem is.

It'll possibly be the thermostat which is clipped above the flame try turning the gas on and while it's lit hold a lit lighter directly on it to see if your oven kicks in.
Out of curiosity whats oven is it?
Yep, definitely the thermocouple that that controls the main gas valve (the thin tube that has the end pointing into the flame). The pilot warms up wax inside the tube and the expansion of the wax opens the gas valve. It needs replacing and should be done by Gas Safe registered engineer.

is that the thermocouple you mean. it a cone shape at the end and it has two leads coming from it. Its an electrolux (built in). How much would it cost roughly and would it mean having to completely remove the oven from the unit.

Not sure of the shape the one's ive seen have a metal tube on the end which goes into a thin pipe which then goes in to the oven temperature knob on the front of your oven and it all comes in one part.
Pain in the arse to fit in a free standing cooker but probably quite simple in a built in oven but it does involve disconnecting and reconnecting the gas pipe so can be risky.
The part will i'd guess at most be about 15 quid dunno about getting it fitted though.

Thanks guys. I will have a look online for any gas safe registered fitters.
cheers for all the advice.
That would be best - you don't want a repeat of that gas explosion recently that demonlished half of a street. Also, you can be prosecuted by the HSE for working on gas appliances if you are not a Gas Safe registered engineer.
Pain in the arse to replace in most ovens as it runs from the bottom oven plate where the flame is delivered up the side of the oven to the back of the knob on the front.
In most cases you have to take the top of the oven off where your rings are to fit the other end to the knob.
Remember to disconnect the gas hose.
The good news is a universal thermocouple is around £10.
As already mentioned there are regulations that prohibit you doing this lawfully in the UK unless your Gas Safe approved.
Not even sure your allowed to disconnect the cooker any more either.
Rules only say that you cannot work for business on gas with out being Gas Safe Registered.
There is nothing to stop you working on your own gas appliances. However you need to know what you are doing
Thermocouple replacement is not rocket science and you are not breaking into the gas supply as such so if you take your time and know how to use basic tools can be done. If you are unsure of have to disconnect anything to get the oven out then don't attempt it
Im gas safe registered and all i can say is that a tightness test is done before and after any work is done. Steer clear of any gaswork as you are not qualified to carry out a gas tightness test. If there is a leak on the gas valve which has nothing to do with the thermo couple the consequence is a big bang. Remember you cant always smell gas leaks
