Default Best DIGITAL SLR for low light (dusk) conditions....

Looking for a DSLR camera to take to Peru on holiday, wanting to take some shots mf Macchu Picchu at sunrise - and my current point and shoot camera just won't do it. Do you have any recommendations for DSLR cameras for use in low light? Did a quick search online but I dont really know what im looking for.......

    Thanks all

Nikon generally have the best high ISO abilities (ie, work with low light), but for 450 quid, you are only really looking at entry level, with a basic lens so dont expect miracles.

Being a Sony user, I know of the newer Sony models have a nice feature where there the camera rapidly takes a series of shots at very high ISO and then combines them, which works surprisingly well to remove noise, but I doubt it will be perfect.

I think the best advice is going to be get yourself a cheap entry level camera (or even an advanced compact) and get yourself a tripod, you can set the camera to use a low ISO and take 3 or 4 second exposures, which will be sharp and clear, as long as the subject isnt moving ofcourse.

I took some night shots this way when i was travelling a few years ago, using an ancient advanced compact and the results were great. I'll see if I can find any later.

Theres a few night shots in my current flickr stream in my sig too, but these were taken with about a grands worth of camera and lens but hand held, although I'm happy with them, having a tripod would have allowed me to get much sharper images.

Agree about budget, for £450 you're looking at both an entry level camera with a bundled entry level lens.

If you ultimately want to get into DSLR photography then fair enough, but otherwise it will be used as a glorified point and shoot - I've seen people spend a lot on a DSLR and then only use Auto mode, which kind of defeats the object of buying a camera like that.

If you just want a good camera and not fussed with DSLR long term I would recommend going for a high end compact or 'prosumer' camera as they are called - something like a Canon G12.

Warehouseexpress are doing the 1000D for under £400 add in a decent light weight tripod and go for long eposure low iso shots. That's your best bet I reckon.

I got this in an email today too

the one thing that stands out over the competitors in in body image stabilisation, which could help with the low light shots.

this seems like a good deal too, in this case it has the image stabiliser in the lens.
