Default A few ideas needed from the creative minds on DF.

I'm currently on a teaching training course, (TESOL) so i can do a bit of travel and work abroad but i've his a brick wall with my current assignment.
I have to plan a lesson based around the theme of money but i cant think of anything.

I need some ideas for games that will teach people with limited English how to impove their grammar, spelling and so on.

The type of thing I have already are..

Starting the class with a simple Match the bank note to the country you think its from (on a map).

A student to student excercise where 1 reads some sentences in slang english from their sheet, the other finds the 'propa' english on his sheet.

some moral type questions off a sheet that each student will answer and then discuss with their partner/group.

I need to pad out an hour, the last part could possible run for as long as I let it as once they start chatting they don't stop until you tell them too but I really want something else to include.

    Anyone got any ideas?

What about getting some items of food and drink on cards, get them to match up the name of the items on other cards then match up the prices of the goods. Do it with about 6 items so 18 cards in all. Throw in a couple of red herrings with poor spelling of items like banana, bannana or orange juise.

You could also get the doing some role play for paying for goods with monopoly money. Give them the amount they owe in words on envelopes then they convert that to money which they put in envelope. Like two hundred and fifty four pounds.

You could then flip the idea and get them to write the amount of cash in the envelope.

not bad Ideas Sie but we did a market scene in the previous lesson, and the final part of tomoros lesson is a role play (were going to finish with a gameshow where the students take part in a quiz, the lessons we're doing are 3x1 hour, with 3 trainees having an hour each).

my aims are to introduce and practice slang really, and to generally get the lesson started, any target vocab/grammar will be done in the other 2 classes

my targets are basically covered in the exercises I have already, but It would look better if I also could maybe expand the teaching a little if possible.

What about a reading exercise and get them to highlight the slang in the passage. The problem is matching that to your topic of money.

Maybe have a look on the net about teaching children about money and then adapt it to adults. Have you got any mates with 8-10 year olds. Find out what they are doing in classes and adapt it. You could look at taxes as well. Vat rates going from 17.5% to 20%.

Teaching slang may be frowned upon. Slang isn't something you usually learn in a classroom environment just like swearing so I would be careful on what you cover unless it has been advised by your mentor.

yep, think I'll do that passage exercise, which is maybe what Cj was trying to hint upon.

Slang will be fine for this, were teaching them basic skills for life, so stuff like quid, as well and phrases like cash-in and so on are fine.

goin to bed now, cheers SiE

My wife is a primary head teacher - I can ask her for advice if you want. I can probably get hold of some basic flash-based educational money games you could use.

There's been a death in the family though so I may not be able to get you the information immediately.

Thanks, but dont worry about it ZX7R. i only have a few hours to prepare so I have to think of some stuff yesterday really, but I'm sure I can manage now.

I'm also trying to keep my materials to a minimum but any stuff like that is always appreciated, as are suggestions from anyone!

what i would do is have some pictures of stobart lorries and some more pictures of asylum seekers, then get them to match up how many can fit into a stobart lorry before getting captured.

you could also add in the extra question of how much CO2 would be produced per dozen etc.

That doesn't cover the money aspect though Det - you'd need to add in some questions along the lines of Calculate the fines for the driver and his company assuming 10%/25%/50%/!00% of the illegals were actually caught

Walk in dressed as an immigration officer, wont be that many left to teach then.
Only in Britain….do we use the word “politics” to describe the process of Government. “Poli” in Latin meaning “many” and “tics” meaning “bloodsucking
    creatures”
