    Default Constant clicking

    Hi Guys
i have an asus M2N4-SLI board with realtek ac97 onboard sound, and for a long time now ive had this fuckin constant clicking sound in the background.

Ive been through EVERY option in the sound options in control panel but i just cant stop it and was wondering if anyone has ever had this before.

if needed i will try and record it and post, but no idea how to rite now.

    any help really appreciated guys

    cheers

I know you've said you've been through every option, but have you tried muting all the input/outputs.

I had a similar problem years ago and it was an unused input causing it.

Pointless if you like to listen to music/use youtube or generally want to hear your computer! The original OP said the ONLY sound he has is a Realtek AC'97.

I agree with the above. In Sound Devices in Control panel, check your recording devices and your playback devices. Mute any you do not use. This would also include Midi/Synth's/Mic's or anything else.

The clicking could also be due to a completely different interference. Ever heard a mobile phone near a speaker? Could be some other device in the area of your speakers causing it like perhaps an external Hard Drive or Wireless Landline handset.

Process of elimination is always the best plan of attack with any computer problem. Let us know once you've set your computer up in the garden away from anything, with nothing hooked up and it's still doing it!

Are you relying on the Windows installed driver for the device? Do not do this if you have problems. Seek the one from Realtek - but dont bother with the site as the server is shit -

So disabling his on board sound, which is built into his motherboard, and seems to be the root of the problem, and sticking in a separate pci sound card, which i will send him for free, will leave him with no sound on his pc???

Well, you learn something new everyday

I apologies, been drinking and didnt realise you offered one! Nice offer!
I read 'I've got THE sound card' instead of 'I've got a sound card'.

One other thing I forgot to mention, a friend of mine uses Skype on a BT Connection and also had a bad clicking sound. He replaced his Sound Card and it still existed. He eventually pin pointed it to his connection and BT admitted a fault with his line. Since they sorted it, Skype works perfect - But if I recall the clicking only happened during Skype calls.

I vaguely remember something about a spinning HDD causing interference. Can you disable the HDD and use a live Ubuntu disc and see what happens then? Could be a shitty earth somewhere?

I had the same problem the op has, when I installed a sound card and disabled the onboard sound like ilscuro recommends, the problem went away, is it like the same click as when you double click something to open it??

naah, I meant plug a pair of headphones into the speaker port and listen to see if the clicking happens through headphones too.. (to eliminate speakers)

another possiblity.. if it is 'exactly' like a double/click sound, go into sound scheme and turn off sound for clicking.. if sound stops then you've probably got something lurking in the background (adverts or something, and clicking noice is result of page/advert changing).. in which case full antivirus/malware/spyware scans..
