if the phone is completely off.. how does it turn itself back on?

surely only standby would be possible.. as a timer would need to run..??

    ah.. you mean airplane mode..?

dunno but my wife has a blackberry and this thing is dead during the night, the only way to turn it back on is to wait till it reaches the startup time or press the power button when its boots up, its definately not in standby.

I just had a Google about this. There is definitely nothing available. A few posts I read here and there suggested it would be a hardware function already built into the phone and that no app could do this.

There is an app called "good night". It will put your phone into silent mode during the night and then turn off silent mode at what ever time you want in the morning. You can also put priority numbers in that will override the silent mode for emergencies.
    Its a good little app.

It's not really dead - it's on standby. If you press the power button when it's "off" during the night you will notice it turns on in a couple of secs. Unplug the battery and put it back in again and you will see it takes a few minutes for the phone to start up.

I use one called "Bedside" very configurable, whitelists for phone and text but so much more, I would not be without it
Good night is no longer available, here's the one I use

Try tasker, complete automation for your phone. Steep learning curve, but I'm pretty sure there's nothing it can't do.
