    Bad News Files Deleted

I have Downloaded a few files from Newsgroups, as have been doing for years, But this Sunday I D/L a particular Wii game which is hard to get!

Anyway 30 mins after D/L and playing this game, I returned to PC and noticed the game had been deleted, along with all my other d/l's and they even removed serials from legit programs on my pc!!

I'm guessing i've been hacked by someone, but just wondering if it is more of a policing 'thing'

Also I am runing several security programs, and not one of them has picked anything up.

Has anyone ever come across anything like this or heard of any problems like this?

I feel very vunerable now and don't really know what to do.

Would ESET & Malware Bytes not detect a system hack, plus pass linksys firewall??

    Regards.

Files being deleted could be simply down to you accidentally moving them into another folder - are you sure they have been deleted and not moved somewhere? (long shot I know)

As for removing serials for other programs - I'm not aware of any software that can remove serials like that so it looks like someones hacked in remotely or someone else has had local access to your system.

What Wii game was it you downloaded? and what programs have had the serials removed?

I've heard something about microsoft security essentials messing up warez, but you haven't mentioned this - maybe worth checking your antivirus logs?

Also I'm guessing your firewall will do sweet fa if say you have something on your pc that "dials home".

    @ Northern Bloke
Will game was Mario Sports mix, removed serial from incredimail 2, MS office 2007 & adobe pro 8.1. Also deleted ultra quicktime, some pc games and over 100 nds games!! I have used several file recovery programs and system restore but no joy!!

    @ Over carl
what do you mean by this m8?

Like a virus or hidden program?

Eset is detecting nothing or malwarebytes.

    Thanks

Yep - thats exactly what I meant - if you already have a virus/spyware/etc causing your pc to connect to elsewhere, unless you have very tightly locked down your firewall it's unlikely to prevent it from doing it's thing.

In a case like this I would consider nothing less than a full reinstall.
Never heard of it myself but it does stink of someone with remote access.

A 'Free Trial' would be better than Malwarebytes FREE Version?!?
Why not try ALL the Free Trials that tell you that you have a problem, but wont fix it...!

"superantispyware" sounds like that is the way to go.
While your there, you can also try Security Tool 2011 too. After all it's 'up to date'.

WARNING - This is total sarcasm. DO NOT install Security Tool 2011 to your machine. It's malicious.

I'm hoping, 3 weeks down the line, a reinstall has occurred and this problem has been sorted.

Just read the OP properly and this is not recommended. Running 'several' security programs is going to cause more harm than good as they counteract each other. One will delete a file, the other knew it existed and tries to delete it, but cant find it = Issues.

Stick with one good one. IE - 1x Anti-Virus program, 1x Malware/Spyware Program.
I bet the the security programs have updated and deleted any known pirated software. My Avast has been getting a bit 'clean happy' lately since the introduction of the 'Sand Box'.

Do what I do, create a folder on an External drive that has all your 'stuff' on and tell your anti-virus this is an exception to the rule. Jobbed.
