    Default car repair advice

taken the car in for mot last week and we got told it needs a new ball joint, hub and possibly driveshaft plus other little bits like handbrake cable etc

the car has been making a tapping sound when we turn right, does this sound like one of the faults above. the tapping is coming from the left front wheel i believe.

never been good with cars so out of my depth here, £235 plus vat we been quoted, does this sound ok

Well dont take it to the hight street vendors no names mentioned but they are`nt that quick of the mark. I went in for them to look at the front tracking as it was slightly wobbling. they put it on the ramps and did a free safety check. Anyhow it needed 1 new shocker on the front 2 new coil springs on the back and 2 new front tyres. Came to a tidy sum of just under £500. I told em to feck off i cant afford that. I priced up the parts from a shop on Harehills Lane and all the parts came to £150. Luckily i have a mate that is doing the work for beer money.

So the moral of this is if your rich goto the high street places otherwise shop around local garages. The price you quoted dont sound that expensive. They make most of the money on labour anyhow

Could be the CV joint or could be the failed ball joint.

Did you hit something? The control arms sound seriously fucked. I personally would not be driving the car until it was repaired. I have seen a few ball joint failures when driving recently. Stuck at the side of the road. Wheel hanging off. Front wing crumpled.

When I was 17 my ball joint went on my old citroen. Luckily it was at a low speed. Damage was minimal.

replaced the drive shaft with one for £15 from scrappers and tis now fine, i went back to the garage as they charged us for work that did not need doing - wrong part replaced and they gave me the brass back with no problems
