He might think he can repair it by cleaning out the board, perhaps he is a dab hand at component level board repair or the part which needs to be replaced to bring it back to life may be cheap. People take gambles on this sort of item as if they fix it and sell it as second hand they will make a decent return.

Or they could take the chassis/casing and the chip with the IMEI stored on it and transfer them onto a phone that's been stolen/blocked etc and end up with a working handset with a legit IMEI number.

Any number of reasons why folks would buy it - I hope your advert made it crystal clear that it was water damaged and not working - one of my mates sold a phone on fleabay with a cracked LCD and said it was for spares or repairs - buyer complained that the phone didn't work and buyer got his money back and kept the phone (wasn't worth the cost to my mate to pay the postage to get it back) - all because he hadn't clearly said the phone didn't work - one of the many reasons why I refuse to use fleabay now under any circumstances, far too many scammers on there

Apparently the most common part to go faulty after water damage in the dock conector board an easy repair really, the iPhones don't really let that much water in if you rescue them quick

Always amazes me what people will buy on eBay without looking at it - Ive had a knackered treadmill in my garage for over 3 yrs (treadmill cost me £400 then it broke and the part to repair it is £420) was going to take it to the tip while having a clear out but decided to sling it on fleabay - sold it for £140! Same thing with a knackered 4x4 shogun I had - K reg no tax or test rusty as fuck and wouldnt start I would happily have taken £100 for it for scrap but stuck it on eBay and got £600 for it within hours. Mental.

One man's rubbish is another man's gold !

A film promotion company went bust across the road and the landlord chucked out four large boxes of old photos used to promote VHS video releases into a skip which after asking him I managed to recover. They ranged from old westerns, pop videos to Airwolf.

There was a set of promo photos for Airwolf which I put on ebay and the Singapore Airwolf fan club beat of loads of other bidders at £810. I though it was some mistake to begin with.

And the real killer was I had 8 of the same single picture of Robert Matthew Van Winkle aka vanilla ice in a promo for ice ice baby. I put them up 1 a week for two months and they always fetched over £60. It was a sad day when they ran out.

The westerns included all the stars of the era with around 50 photo per set and they always fetched over £100 and I had about 15 sets of them. Sold one set to a company that decks out pubs for £220.

I made so much money the first month I even had to verify my paypal account at the time as I had reached the limit on the amount I could receive.
