FFS, struggling to find a 1f 2.5v electrolytic in my spares or even a uk stockist.

i think i may have some at work, will look tomorrow. something around that value anyway.
we use them in our battery back up circuit.

The voltage isnt important (as long as its >= 2.5v) so any 1F electrolytic will do.

    1.5nF not 1F ?
    That isnt going to work.

Know nothing about components, sorry if this is the wrong thing.

    lol 1.5F

not nF! half asleep. not even looked what the cap is doing - but figure they prob have a 20% tolerance on a cap that big anyway so that value may work

Cheers, but I think I will stick with a 1F from either RS or CPC. 1.5F is 50% out and I think the charge times might be quite critical in this instance.
Let us know how you get on if you have a go with one though....thanks.

Good grief...why dont they just say "capacitor value : dunno, could be anything really"

    yes value = "big".

i guess this cap is providing power to an IC . will try and build one next week using shit i have here.

Im a bit puzzed by it. If you look at the schematics, that probe is permanantly tied to ground....the capacitor and diode make not a jot of difference to that aspect....so the point thats probed is only ever being grounded. The desired effect must be something to do with the effect the capacitor is having on the 1.8v supply whilst charging/charged. I'll have a search for a technical explaination later. After 20 years, my qualifications are now effectively worthless as I have forgotten 99% of the theory and retained only the practical skills !

they tell you the CAP value - its 1F 2.5V

do you want some fucker to spoon feed you as well ?

Tried this and works a treat btw. used a CAP from an old XBOX 1

No rap we were talking about the tolerance of the cap on the rs website not the tx diagram . Electronics is one subject I don't need spoon feeding :-)
Was surprised to see such a wide tolerance is all
Tronads was on about the manufacturers data sheet for the cap

No spoon feeding required here...I have an HNC in Electronic Engineering and hold an Intermediate Amateur Radio Licence....I am just about capable of reading a circuit diagram with 2 components on it !
Just was surprised to see tolerance figures of 80% quouted by RS.
Have to admit Ive never really looked at capactor tolerance values ever...not like resistors where of course the tolerance is more critical and is seen when you read the color bands.

Had a Liteon cross my path tonight, but not yet got hold of a suitable cap so had to MRA it.

you don't need the cap, just switch the 3.3v, and probe with the earth.

Yeah just read that . only these "battery backup" caps have such poor tolerance - usually it's 20% worst case. I guess cos they are huge values in tiny packages and hard to make
