Default Help! Black screen of death, vista

My lad's pc runs Vista SP2...

He has the black screen of death (Windows loading window, then nothing).

I've put the installation DVD in and it does exactly the same as the hard-drive (above)

crcdisk, sys is where it fails on a safeboot...

last known good config doesn't work either...any ideas?

From what I understand you may require a reinstall, But don't format the drive just install over it and it should create a windows.old file which keeps all your documents and stuff.

Oh that's a right royal pain in the arse as I only re-installed it on Friday and it took 18hrs and 3Gb of updates to make it work...

I'd not long installed the nVidia gfx drivers from their website, so if I can get onto the HDD I may delete anything in \windows\system32\drivers starting with nv...

    Sorted!

Using my noodle, sat down and had a think...

It didn't boot off the HDD and didn't appear to boot off the DVD Vista Inst Disk, but after half an hour the disk booted but couldn't see the HDD.

I replaced the SATA cable et voila...it booted up!
