Virgin Upgrade Without New Contract?

Hi there,
New to this site and wondering if anyone can help me. Unfortunately for me I'm not too amazing with computers, so aren't going to try and get more speed without paying the dreaded Virgin for it.
I've recently moved into a flat with some friends who have had their Virgin for about 18 months or so. I think the package they have is: TV L and Broadband L.

I really would love more speed and the associated slightly but still useful upload increase, but we're at university and graduating in September. So basically I would like to pay more for more speed, but don't want to sign a new contract, and don't really want new equipment.

Am I right in thinking I can get upgraded to 30Mb without needing a plush new modem?

And do Virgin have any flexibility with regards to shorter-term upgrades?

1st post and already asking for help. This forum has been going many years and we all help out each other. But when newbies come on they leech the info and they are gone forever. Why not post an introduction about your self in the "introduce" yourself sections. Then why not search around this large site as the info you require has probably already been posted

In answer to your question, you might be out of luck. In my experience, if you so much as breathe in the direction of a virgin media employee, it means taking out a new 12 month contract.
