I thought The Office was brilliant, but was a bit disappointed when I had seen An Idiot Abroad. You kinda feel that there's something missing constantly when you watch it, and I'm not talking about common sense which Carl lacks. I think it's more that he is not enough of an idiot to make good TV.

I thought it was brilliant. Once you look past the obvious - that Karl isn't always being set up and a lot of it is clearly well organised/scripted - then it's funny in it's own right without having to try to be funny and believable.

liked the first series so looking forward to this, scripted or not its funny!
You know he grew up as a little shitspark from the old shitflint and then he turned into a shitbonfire and driven by the winds of his monumental ignorance he turned into a raging shitfirestorm. If I get to be married to Barb I'll have total control of Sunnyvale and then I can unleash the shitnami tidal wave that will engulf Ricky and extinguish his shitflames forever. And with any luck he'll drown in the undershit of that wave. Shitwaves.

never really watched the office so can't comment, I think Karl Pilkington is ace the series was a bit hit and miss IMHO the first episode in China was pure class so were funny others not at all, it's that wanker Gervais I can't stand with his false feckin laugh!

I like all the Gervais/Merchant colaborations, but can get a bit 'tedious' after a few.

Personally I'd like to see more of Merchant fronting things, thought he was hilarious in Extra's.

Officially announced to start in September.

As usual, Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant pull the strings from the comfort of their office, as Karl journeys further from his comfort zone and encounters more confused locals and cultural differences.

“When we asked Karl to list his ‘Things to do before you die’," says Ricky, "the only thing he could think of was ‘work in B & Q part time’. So we decided to make a list for him." On that list are activities including swimming with dolphins, travelling Route 66, and staying on a desert island, as Karl discovers whether they're all they're cracked up to be.

Having struggled with some of the activities in the last series, Karl only agreed to do a second if he had more control of the bucket list, being able to choose which things he does, and where he goes.

But Ricky and Stephen won't let him off that easily…

An Idiot Abroad 2 comes to Sky1 HD in September 2011.
    Really looking forward to this.

Karl had quite a decent job at XFM so can't be that thick. I think he knows what he's doing is funny and hams it up abit. And it's to his credit because he's a funny fucker!

I agree that Merchant should do more things on tv. Him and Barry were comedy hold in Extras, especially when chatting up them birds! I'm looking forward to his stand up shows at the end of the year.

From Rickys Blog: Spent the day editing An Idiot Abroad.

It's really shaping up and the little exclusive scene we showed in Edinburgh went down a storm.

Someone went to all the trouble of doing a live blog of my session by the way, and here's a little clip.

It's a shame I look like a sweaty, 60 year old gangster at a wedding but still, mustn't grumble.

You may know already but An Idiot Abroad starts Friday, 23rd September (happy birthday Karl) at 9pm.

I've heard from a couple of people that they are going to throw "Idiot Abroad" parties and watch it with friends. Ha ha. This could be bigger than Eurovision. You should all wear swimming caps.

If they edited out Gervais it would have been perfect. Karl carried the show fine by himself but the feeling I got from Gervais was that he was just spouting bollocks to steal the limelight from Karl.

Pilkington is an idiot in the same way Ali G was, comedy personas acted out by genuinly intelligent, funny people.
