There's generally leaflets at train stations in and around London that you can just pick up.

You'll love it, just don't get annoyed by the rude ignorant wankers on the tube rushing about. Avoid the tube at rush hour and you should be fine. Use http://www.lastminute.com/site/lifestyle/ to find some decent offers. London Dungeons are ok but nothing special, there are loads of great museums for free though. The science museum is my favourite but natural history museum is also very good. London zoo and aquarium are ok but cost a bit. Sight seeing is free if you can use the underground efficiently. China town has some very decent restaurants at decent prices. If you are into art the Tate modern is good but I hate the portrait gallery etc. (too boring). If you are into military stuff check out the imperial war museum. There are cheap boat trips down the Thames, some are better than others. Loads more but you can only fit so much into a day.

If you want a birds eye view of London book onto the London eye. Costs a bit but if you get good weather then is well worth it.

Been a few times but to quote the wife for some of the sites.

Me: that's big ben over there.
Wife: it's just a big clock.
    Me: what did you expect??
    Wife: I'm not really sure.

Me: look that's Buckingham Palace there.
Wife: oh right it's really just a big house then.
    Me: well yeah.

That was a few years back and yet I still laugh at them. The tube is easy to navigate be sure to get a day pass or week pass depending on how long your there for.

Also Soho is a good laugh and can be an eye opening experience.

you do know big ben isn't the clock right ?

anyway, I'm a non londoner but been loads of times and last year we did the dungeon and the eye as a 2 for 1 offer (we paid for the eye as we entered the dungeon) and really enjoyed both. They're normally falling over themselves to sell you multi attraction deals.

I always enjoy the science museum, natural history museum and the v&a, but all my best days have been getting a day pass for the tube and just getting off at random stops. Tottenham court road, covent garden etc.

An evening around china town and soho is a great laugh and surprisingly friendly usually. I always seem to end up in the same bars even though I've no real idea where I'm going !

Last time I was in China Town I went to Leong's Legends which was very nice and reasonable. You have to knock on the door to get in, might go back tomorrow actually. At night the China Town/Leicester Square/Covent Garden area is pretty lively. Went to Soho the other week and (apart from a really small alley) it wasn't how I remembered it from years ago...

Talking of this reminds me to sort out the DF meet dates.

Sophisticats is worth a visit. However, as mentioned the Eye, Aquarium, Science and Natural History museums are all worth a visit as is the dungeon and the tower of London.

If your there over the weekend go to Camden through the day for a bit of people watching - might be boring if you take kids though but sitting round by the canals having a couple of drinks is great when the weathers decent and you quite often see some celebs round that way. I also would recommend the London eye and Leicester square on a night. Go visit places like Harrods and see how the other half live also go to the tower of London and go on a guided tour there they are quite funny.
Covent Garden is also nice to vist on a nice day and you can walk there from Trafalgar square in about 10 mins.

Or you could walk there from Leicester Square in about 2 minutes. The Leicester Square - Covent Garden tube journey is the shortest one of all but it's also the most popular. If you take the tube you'd actually be walking further than just walking there directly.
