I have to eat my words from what I said at the beginning of this thread - this thing does seem interesting indeed!
Unfortunately I'm no good at writing s/w though so I think I'll wait and see what comes out but I'm sure I'll end up with some of these - already I'm thinking it would be nice to plug one up to every telly in the house just for the net.
Brilliant - thanks very much Det I've ordered one, will be interesting to have a look.
Incidentally I wonder exactly how many will actually reach school kids? They will be snapped up by curious 20-40 year olds
No sympathy for the devil; keep that in mind. Buy the ticket, take the ride...
Being a school governor, it's the educational side of things that particularly interests me about these things...I have spoken with teachers about my concerns about how GCSE subjects in "IT" only seem to be teaching children how to use Excel and other off the shelf packages..... there is little programming whatsoever anymore. These could be just the ticket.
I have one of these on pre-order at CPC (A Farnell subsiduary), I will be taking a look at it with great interest when I eventualy get hold of it, though I don't know anything about Python, I was under the impression that given its Linux platform, pretty much any language will be available for the device.

I will be getting a few of these, eventually. But I think I'll wait for the mass hysteria to die down. Most of the people who buy these thinking they're the bollocks aren't going to know what to do with them. The other side of this is.... how are these devices going to help programming skills improve in our youth? The skills need to be taught.

Could'nt agree more the books though don't seem to have moved on since I learned how to program basic on my green screen amstrad cpc464, that said I would have loved something like this when I was at school but the teacher we had was also the french teacher and he kicked me out of the class for reading some of the files that were sat there in shared folders on the schools wide open network,
If the schools were to get some of these for class they could ask the parents to pay £20-25 for one of these that will be theirs, so the kids can take it into school and work on it then take it home and carry on, and if they dont want to pay for one then the kid still gets access to one at school.
I dont know where I read it (could have been this thread lol) but from what I understand you can program in python for it which while im not brilliant at I can just about hold my own. So teaching kids how to write their own plugins for xbmc (im sure they are/were done in python) I know I would've been more into that than making lego traffic lights come on and go off.
You must know some different kids to the ones I know. Learn for themselves you say. Read a book, you say. I don't know these youngsters.
