It's also quite another thing to think "you know what I could do with that £100" and sell it, which is of course your want, versus posting that you're going to sell it at a profit on a tech forum where people are wanting them to actually use.

Greedy capitalism. This is what will ruin the planet. People trampling on each other in primark. A company that actually makes shit clothes and exploits developing countries and openly employs child labour. People scouring HUKD to make a £3 profit. And people buying up as many RasPi's as they can because they appear like a bargain. Most of the people buying them don't actually know what they can do with them, but want them because others are buying them. Just think of the profit Del Boy and Rodney could make on the zombie morons. Anyone with more than 5 braincells would pay no more than retail for these. There is no reason to pay more, they aren't actually worth it. What can you really do? If you want a media centre both an Apple TV and Acer Revo are cheaper options.

    Crazy....!

Reminds me of the hysteria around the HP Touchpad.

I started watching some programming tutorials on YouTube. In the first one the bloke showed how to install a virtual machine (something box) on a windows computer and then install the same Linux OS that the raspberry pi is recommending.

One of the first things that struck me was what have I really bought it for? I'm not thinking of selling it or anything when it does eventually arrive, I just thought if I'm interested in programming (not really) then I already have a pc to do that.

I think there must be loads of people like me who get a bit nostalgic sometimes for when computers were much simpler and that's probably the reason why many raspberry pi's were bought and continue to be bought.

They had one rigged up at the gadget show, only had chance for a very quick glance at it but the video it was outputting looked very smooth.

1 for my SABNzb, another for a Mame project, another for XMBC... Got a few projects I want to do with mine.
Because they are so small also, I can take into work to have a play with it too Or have a 4th that stays at work and just clone the SD cards.

    It would be VirtualBox.

Don't be fooled into thinking getting a Raspberry Pi is going to enable you to have a cheap media centre, PC etc.
You are going to need to invest not only money (for SD cards, USB chargers, HDMI cable etc) but time in it as well.
You will need to learn linux, learn how to compile, troubleshoot and generally learn how not to think like a Windows user.

    Why?

It will be like it always has. Somebody will do the hard work and create an all-in-one installer and people will be ready to go. HDMI cable is a few quid, same as everything else mentioned.

Despite the hundreds of applications for this device most people getting one won't have a clue. Majority of users will make it into a media player type thing and forget about it. There is little point in getting one for that purpose alone. You can buy media playing HDDs or NAS drives, wireless boxes that do that.

Chances of anyone doing anything great with one, or learning a new skill are very remote IMO.

People have just been made to think that this is a PC for $25, which really, it isnt.

    What is OpenELEC?

Open Embedded Linux Entertainment Center, or OpenELEC for short, is a small Linux distribution built from scratch as a platform to turn your computer into a complete XBMC media center. OpenELEC is designed to make your system boot as fast as possible and the install is so easy that anyone can turn a blank PC into a media machine in less than 15 minutes.

I reckon there will be app store equivalents making the process far easier for the average joe bloggs, it's all very early days yet. For the price, using it for xbmc is a major positive for me and worth the price of entry.

Far too much hype for a product that is yet to prove itself. It's hardly off the shelf yet.

    Compared to the ATV2 -
    1. Better Spec than RaspberryPi.
    2. Already running XBMC perfectly - just not 1080p.
    3. About to drop in price.
    4. Comes with a nice plastic case and power cable.

I'm not convinced it's going to be as good as they say, but I guess time will tell.
I'm a lot more interested in other things it can be used for -

But... a quick switch of the SD card and you change it from a dedicated XBMC to a Mame box etc..
Yes you could install everything on it, but the freedom is there to configure it for each use nicely.

i have one on pre-order for use as a media centre and emulators, i reckon it wont be long before their are complete images ready to be flashed to an SD-Card that will give you everything you need for an XBMC or Emulator ready system, it won't happen overnight but it will most likely happen and if it doesn't well someone else will create or port software for it that will be useful, essentially for the money I dont think you can go wrong, some of my ideas:

    Jukebox
    Emulator Box
    Mame Box
    XBMC
    etc.
You know he grew up as a little shitspark from the old shitflint and then he turned into a shitbonfire and driven by the winds of his monumental ignorance he turned into a raging shitfirestorm. If I get to be married to Barb I'll have total control of Sunnyvale and then I can unleash the shitnami tidal wave that will engulf Ricky and extinguish his shitflames forever. And with any luck he'll drown in the undershit of that wave. Shitwaves.

I can pick up an ATV3 from the USA for roughly £60-£70. Once it has XBMC capability I am going to pick one up for the kids room. It's far prettier. And by the looks of ebay, cheaper than a Pi. When the hype dies down, I will pick up a Pi and have a play. But probably not with the intention of using it as a media centre.

my main objective in the short term is to chuck xbmc on it and hot glue it/or a holder for it to the back of the tv, I've been brushing up on my coding skills (which really really needed a good clean lol) and I'm working my way through learning Ruby and re-learning python and some java not for anything other than wanting to learn something new and relearn something old lol, Thinking back to the last thing I made its now was crap and out of date lol (it was generating passwords that were a combination of letters and numbers to help friends change their default wifi username and password)

I know its not the same as learning to code or creating something unique with the cheap little machine but once the atv3 has been jailbroke and runs xbmc i've been thinking of creating a pc in the car with gps dongles being as cheap as they are and with the addition of a bluetooth dongle and cheap screen that fits in the glove box this could be an awesome little car computer with wifi, Bluetooth and gps it has the opportunity to change over to a backtrack wardriving monster with the change of an sd card lol

    Thanks to casio

Got mine this morning, done nothing with it yet, but the main plan is to use it for some little projects and as a lightweight (and SFF) XBMC device for the bedroom TV.
