Have you checked using thetrainline? They're normally quite cheap. Also Sometimes its cheaper to buy a railcard and use it, then pay the full fare.

Don't use the trainline unless you're using quidco, they charge a booking fee. Go directly through the train operators website to avoid the booking fee, they sometimes also have offers that aren't available elsewhere.

Try splitting the journey up, travel between cities is often much cheaper than other journeys. Also try coaches with national express etc. and check megabus and megetrain.

National Express Leicester to London can be done for £21 return, 2 1/2 hrs each way.

Assuming you are travelling from Leicester to Twickenham:

To get a good price, you will need to buy an advance ticket which means you need to fix the times that you are travelling out/in. Leicester to St. Pancras (I know you're going Twickenham, read on) is served by East Midlands Trains (EMT), and EMT's advance tickets are very competitive - I frequently travel between Wellingborough - four stations below Leicester - and St. Pancras for £6.60 single, off-peak. For this particular route, there will not be a cheaper train journey that goes via some obscure location. The guards on-board are strict about you travelling on the time printed on your ticket, so make sure you can stick to it.

As long as you buy a Leicester to Twickenham train ticket, you do not need to buy an underground ticket for the St. Pancras <-> Vauxhall connection because it is included in the cost of your train ticket.

Take the advice of others and do not book through thetrainline.com - they charge fees which can be avoided easily by using the EMT website instead. In addition, booking directly with EMT means you could get additional discount (these journeys have their prices highlighted in yellow).

If there are 3 or 4 of you going, then you can scrap buying single tickets altogether and just buy a GroupSave ticket. This lets you all travel for the price of 2 standard return tickets - so £104.20 between you all. 4 kids can travel in addition to these 4 passengers for an extra quid each.
